I don't believe this weeks hardware bump was exclusively because of Dragon Quest, although it's without a doubt a huge franchise in Japan. I'm hoping it's partly because the Wii U is starting to look more desirable to Japanese customers with the bundles and increase of releases. Time will tell. Either way this trend is going to continue into 2014 due to DK (which sells a lot in Japan), Mario Kart and Smash Bros (if it's released early in the year).

Unfortunately other Japanese developers don't seem to be busy developing games for the console, but hopefully this will get better if sales flat out at a higher level than they were in 2013.

And obviously the majority of western gamers are looking for a console with the FIFAs, Maddens, CODs and GTAs. Maybe more gamers will come to their senses the coming year and realize that the Wii U is a great secondary console that complements a PS4 or an Xbox really well. As for me, the Wii U is my primary console at the moment, and will be for months (or even years) to come.

Exclusive third-party support sells hardware, especially when it's a major franchise like Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter.

Dragon Quest could boost the Ouya's sales to 40K.

That's just Dragon Quest.

Wiiu got boosted by the holidays mainly. If you think that an expansion pack of an already released game on the wiiu is what caused the boost, you're kidding yourself.

Predictions for LT console sales:

PS4: 120M

XB1: 70M

WiiU: 14M

3DS: 60M

Vita: 13M

Hope it keeps like 40k a week. Would be 40k x 12months = 480k a year only in Japan

you forgot that each month has about 4 weeks

each year has exactly 52 weeks so 52 * 40,000 = 2,080,000 units a year in Japan, WiiU will probably rise again next week unless P&D matches AC:NL

I'm expecting 70K or so next week even though i highly doubt that it will reach that

bet with ash3336 he wins if Super Mario 3D World sells less than Mario Sunshine during the first three years, I win if 3D World outsells Sunshine's first 3 years. Loser get sig controlled for 3 months (punishment might change)

Do you doubt the WiiU? Do you believe that it won't match the GC?

Then come and accept this bet

I see what you did there...

the game sold well mainly because the Wii version sold out during pre-orders so people had to buy the WiiU version, that might explain how the game suddenly appeared on COMG pre-orders and why the Wii version didn't gain a lot of points after reaching 80

40k a week will led to an average of 1.92m. Maths ma' boy.

And I though my math exam went good Monday ~,~

As I'm sure people have pointed out, this was not even close to a 10x bump...factoring in holiday trends, the bump is at most 10K, if that. Apparently this expansion can only be played if you already own the game and because the original didn't chart this week, it was probably mostly bought by people who already owned the game (and therefore, the system). This implies that the bump coming this week was largely coincidental.

Also, learn some context. This is the holiday season, even in Japan...while the effect isn't as large there, constant HW bumps until the end of the year are pretty much expected for all consoles.
