Forums - Gaming Discussion - Was Sony's focus on late last gen triple A a failure?

No it wasnt a failure, because long term support is what sells playstation's.
People who buy consoles early dont just buy it looking at the games they can play on that day, but the games they can expect all the way until next gen comes.
This expectation isnt really there with the other 2 major brands.

That's crazy.

MS may have a 5% better launch lineup, but in 2 years from know that'll be a distant memory. But it will also remain in the memory how Sony supported the PS3 with a variety of quality exclusives right until the end, whilst MS only disappointed with their paltry, lacklustre first party effort in the last years of the 360.

There really is no contest here. Sony's software output absolutely creams whatever MS has done since (at least) end 2009.

Just to interject 360 had an amazing year in 2010. And lets be honest, the X1 launch lineup is way more diversified. PS4s best system seller is KZ, and that is a genre gamers are better off playing BF 4 or COD. X1 has a Zombie slayer, car sim, and a free-to-play fighter......3 genres you wouldnt expect a Xbox to highlight on its launch. Hell even Ryse is amazing, not critically, but sells based on the game concept/graphics alone.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

I think it was a good decision. Sony has a reputation for supporting their systems for a long time rather than abandoning them. Consumers appreciate that, better return on investment for them. Almost every game during the launch period are mediocre for both systems, so I think Sony made a good choice.

Gran Tursimo 6 will not do better on ps4 because of the install base people should stop complaning ps4 will get Gran Turismo 7 and 8.

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

Well Beyond certainly won't give Sony a profit. GT6 is a no brainer for profit, but it won't have the legs that GT5 had.

It is almost like these games were made as a PR stunt, disregarding maximum profit and only did it so the forums can praise them for supporting PS3 so late in the gen.

Well I doubt Beyond would have made them more money on the PS4. About GT6, I know alot of people think it was stupid to put it on PS3, but I don't agree with that. The way I see it GT6 is something like the Prologue to GT7, the game probably was way cheaper to make compared to GT5 since the engine and most of the cars/tracks were already in place and with comments about a GT7 in 2014 (I will believe that when I see it) I'm almost 100% sure that GT7 has been in the works alongside of GT6 for a long time now.

So I think GT6 is essentially free money.

You'll see another couple million ps3's sold when persona 5 comes out too.
Sony's fcus on library is what helped it outsell the 360, and what helps sell the ps4. People know that Sony will support their console far longer than anyone else, and that reassures buyers.

Last of Us did very well, but Beyond and now GT6 have basically flopped completely, they seem like completely forgotten unyped games, while MS parades a better initial XBO lineup around.

I know Xbox owners who bought or borrowed a PS3 to play the Last of US. And some of them even went to discover the Uncharted 2 and 3. They have now planned to get a PS4 hoping for Uncharted 4 or the Last of US 2. If they can get some Xbox owners to buy the PS3 and consider the PS4, then it's a win for them.

Beyond Two Souls probably isn't achieving sales expectations or critical reception.

However... I think you're calling GT6 a failure based on a less than stellar metascore. But its safe to presume sales will be fine.

Sony definitely dropped the ball on PS4's launch exclusives. But 3rd parties have picked up the slack.

I know a guy who bought a PS3 to play PS3 exclusives, but didn't much care for them and now owns a X1. ME!

Hooray for anecdotal evidence!
