Forums - Sales Discussion - The official January NPD Thread

Numbers won't change much with Canada, we are very influenced by the US. In general, our 360 to PS3 different ratios have been even less.

Sony leaving console business confirmed :(

DS numbers only off slightly, just double in fact.

Lol also wasn't the ps3 bankrupting Sony

Now the game will really get exciting. Can't wait until both the ps3 and 360 introduce a pricedrop. Will be a good indicator of where they both stand in the states. In Europe the ps3 seems poised to surpass it regardless and in Japan the difference is close to 4-1. So America will be a very interesting battleground between the two.

Edit - Also I can't wait for the adjustments that will be made. Keep in mind Sony did manage to ship 4.9 million consoles in the 3rd quarter so its not surprising to see them, doing well.

1/ Even if VGC is different, I thought that VGchartz was similar (in the methdology) to NPD, neither better, neither worse, so, in a way, adjustement is not a necessity because we dont know which one is "wrong" ?

2/ BR will push the PS3 even stronger when Toshiba will completely stop to support the HD DVD

3/ ckmlb, Xbox360 Arcade is everywhere but Arcade is not the top selling Xbox360. People firstly buy Premium/Elite and casuals prefer the Wii ...

1. My understanding of the methodology behind this site isn't exact but as far as I know even though the tracking method may be similar VGCharts uses a smaller sample size. That doesn't neccessarily mean you can't get accurate results though.  Heck NPD doesn't include WalMart and TRU so their data also has a margin of error with some estimation.  It just means the chances of ioi/vgcharts getting some data that isn't representative of the whole market is possible.

the war is really getting interesting now..

n'est-ce pas?

Well, lets wait and see what ioi says. I hope he figures out why there are such huge differences against NDP's data. WE know NDP and VGC use different data samples but NDP's sample is supposed to be much larger.

I think this month ioi should probably "use" NDP's data to tune his numbers a bit.

Btw, this is AWESOME news for PS3 sales, 260k in USA alone :)

Optimistic predictions for 2008 (Feb 5 2008): Wii = 20M, PS3 = 14M, X360 = 9.5M

NPD yes, has coverage of about 60% of the market.

But VGC ...................................... we'd be lucky if VGC covers even 10% of the NA market.
