Forums - Sales Discussion - So the console market continues to shrink...

We´ve seen so many fanboyism these days on these forums that it seems that people are not noticing this:

Year to Date Sales Comparison (Same Periods Covered)

Take a look of console sales comparing year-to-year sales for the same period, the number of consoles sold is just decreasing year after year... and it´s decreasing fast, even with Vita and WiiU price cuts and the two biggest console launches ever.

Of course this decrease is in part due to low sales of Nintendo home consoles, but even if we consider that Xbox360 and PS3 owners may have been upgrading, those brands are also down year-to-year.

Is the videogame marketing having trouble in getting new consumers? Is it definetely getting niche and losing the casual audience that milked it two years agot?

Your chart is great but your analysis is off. Nintendo home hardware is nearly flat and 3DS is up. The main source of decline is the XBOX brand and Sony handhelds. Also, when you factor in total dollars spent on gaming the market may have grown. The new hardware is more expensive.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

I can only roll my eyes at nonsense like this.

No one has figures of the transition from ps2 gen to ps3 or ps1 gen to ps2?

So you think Nintendo can ship over 55m hardware items in one year again?

....and you think Playstation can beat 37m hardware shipments in one year this gen?

If you want to include handhelds into the equation then I suggest you look for a planet that doesn't have ipads, iphones and fancy gadgets that pretty much replace those handheld consoles 1-to-1.

If someone suggests that the home console market is shrinking right after 2 consoles launched and broke all records before them then I'd have to wager that such a person needs to re-evaluate his statistical analysis methods.

Surprisingly some people don't think so.

I've been flabbergasted by the "death of consoles" talks that have sprung up every now and then. Such a load of shit.

Those 3 million PSP owners in 2013 should have bought Vita's. Curse them!

Currently own:

  • Ps4

Currently playing: Witcher 3, Walking Dead S1/2, GTA5, Dying Light, Tomb Raider Remaster, MGS Ground Zeros

We shall see.  I'd wager this gen is the most front loaded ever due to the length of it and the hype available from internet sources and the like.  But I may be wrong.

But the op was talking about home and handheld.

"But the op was talking about home and handheld."

I know that, but I think everyone ignores it because it's just a little ridiculous to do that.

The economic-enthusiast climate has certainly changed a lot - to the point where common people here in South Africa know that the PS4 is coming out in a few days. Those same people wouldn't have had a clue tha the PSOne, Saturn and N64 were part of the same gen. So for sure: Electronics do sell through a lot more at launch because of factors you mentioned.

But I think you are likely to be proven wrong. I *think* so.
