Forums - Sales Discussion - So the console market continues to shrink...

We´ve seen so many fanboyism these days on these forums that it seems that people are not noticing this:

Year to Date Sales Comparison (Same Periods Covered)

Take a look of console sales comparing year-to-year sales for the same period, the number of consoles sold is just decreasing year after year... and it´s decreasing fast, even with Vita and WiiU price cuts and the two biggest console launches ever.

Of course this decrease is in part due to low sales of Nintendo home consoles, but even if we consider that Xbox360 and PS3 owners may have been upgrading, those brands are also down year-to-year.

Is the videogame marketing having trouble in getting new consumers? Is it definetely getting niche and losing the casual audience that milked it two years agot?

I doubt PS4 and Xone will have problems reaching their predecessors total sales combined I would bet they will even surpass that. If something shrunk its the blue ocean Nintendo was fishing in.

Hey I got a revelation for you: next year the sales ofd PS360 will be even lower... BOOOM!! Console market collapsing next year, everyone pack it up, PS4 is already dead due to dying last gen!

smh

Looks like a typical intergenerational transition to me. While I agree console sales will decline (i.e. 7th gen was the peak gen for consoles), which means the peak year for gen 8 will be lower than the peak for gen 7, 2013 will probably be a proximate low point and sales will climb from 2014-2016 or 17 before they start going south again.

Wii U will get a price cut, which means it will increase in sales, and PS4bone will sell very well. I expect PS4 to peak in annual sales somewhere between 15 and 20 million, and Xb one should peak at something close to X360 but probably under, maybe 11 or 12 million. 3DS will probably peak at 20 million in a year, but it won't get near DS's 29 million peak. The less said about Vita the better. So I think the gen 8 peak will probably reach gen 7's 2010 level, but it won't get near gen 7's 2008 peak.

It's almost like there is a generation ending or something.

lol whatever makes you better about the WiiU situation i guess!

The PS4 and Xbone will replace the falling sales of their older brothers, but that won't happen this year. They have just launched and won't sell billions right away.

PS4 could, but there is not enough supply and Xbone has a price/image problem.

Do this again in 2014 ;)

When has any console every sold billions lol?

Not right after launch, that's for sure.

And you know what i mean ;)

oh shit did you mean dollars because I thought you meant units :P. But, your right in that case :).

why's it so hard for people to think logically? have you conisdered the below points before you make your post?

1. How much are PS3/360 sold for in 2012? How much are PS4/XB1 sold for now? Consumers don't suddenly have more disposable income. Less units sold doesn't mean less money spent on gaming.

2. Many people plan on buying a next gen console (PS4/XB1), myself included but are holding onto the purchase for mutiple reasons such as: there is simply no supply, or they don't want to buy during the launch window because they want to wait and see.

Wow I had no idea the PS3 outsold the 360 that significantly this year :O .

common sense would have told u that the reason for the decrease was the aging of the consoles and launch of the new console generation! article is a waste!
