Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii to my PC monitor - how?

I'm in a quandry. TV constantly used by the misses to watch soaps, Wii can't be used cos it's the only TV. Now aside from banning soaps on the TV (along with all the nagging that'd ensue), I am trying to figure out how to connect the Wii to one of my PC monitors - one has DVI and VGA, the other just VGA.

I've tried using the Wii plugged into the TV card, but that was useless - the delays caused by the PC processing the signal ruined it.

So I'm left with looking for a cable to plug my Wii into my VGA. An internet search has come up with only one lead (if you excuse the pun) - http://www.thegametrain.com/wiiplaystation-3-vga-cable-480p720p1080i1080p-p-478.html which seems to be what I want, but alas they have none in stock. Anyone know of any better UK based providers of such cables?

I am largely platform agnostic. I fail to understand why some people get overly fanboyish about what is an inanimate piece of electronics that's obsolete even before it's launched, when there are far more important things to champion, such as preventing environmental destruction or preventing millions of people dying unnecessarily from illnesses. This fact however, doesn’t mean I am not someone who doesn’t enjoy gaming as a pastime (as I have done for the last 20 years) or doesn’t have a strong interest in how the market is evolving – hence my presence on this site.

Platforms owned – PC, DS, X-Box 360, PS3, PSP and Wii.

Not that I can really help you, but someone posted a link to this the other day:

Perhaps you can try searching online for UK stores that stock that. No idea in regards to the quality or anything like that as my monitor has component inputs so I haven't had the need to get VGA cables.

what you need is a scan converter. Since I'm from the US, it would be hard for me to find a shop that sells what you need, but if you google "TV to VGA Converter" you should find what you need.

For example, I found this one by Startech
http://www.startech.com/Product/ItemDetail.aspx?productid=CPNT2VGAA&c=US

however, it is a bit pricey ~$100

EDIT: however, something like this would be more useful in case you wanted to plug other systems into your monitor, not just a Wii or PS3

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

I just got mine yesterday. I think its really good quality and it even produces 480p. It was 40usd I don't know what that is in the UK.The only issue is that it doesn't support 480i games. SO if you have a game with 480i only you have to hook it up to a tv.

Yeah i'd go with that cable if sc94597 says it works good.

I bought an X2VGA transcoder months back and it works amazing but it's more expensive and a simple VGA cable wasn't offered back then (or I just couldn't find one ).

As for the 480i Wii and GC games not the cable nor a transcoder would get around that as most monitors can't handle 480i resolutions. In that situation using the TV card is your best bet. You can try to minimize the delay by using Dscaler, that's what I use with my 480i GC games.

I'd still suggest getting the cable for your 480p games as it looks far better.

^those cables should wrok but don't come cheap at all. Why do u need to connect it to ur monitor? It's a bit pricey but if u must, go with http://www.vdigi.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1%A0

Dscaler or VirtualDub can be used with a TV card to play games without lag. It still doesn't look that great though.

I'm thinking of throwing down money for that VGA cable, but that would disable my monitor for computer browsing, which kinda sucks...I'd like to be able to do both at once.

But I have a regular TV in my room anyway...so I usually use that for playing games.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Congrats on not contributing again...that link was already provided.

Well Ben you could always get a splitter of some kind so you wouldn't have to worry about switching cables every time you play or stop playing. My transcoder allows you to just have a switch between computer input and the console input. Of course it's meaningless to me as I use DVI for my computer and VGA for the Wii....
