Forums - Gaming Discussion - How to spend $4,000 on video games in 1 Hour!

The owner of the company I work for came to me this morning and asked me to do him a favor.  He asked around and found out that I am a gamer.  He has 4 grandkids aged 7-13 years old and he wants to get them gaming stuff for Christmas.  He wants to spend $1,000 each on them.

He wants me to head out and get the stuff with him, but he only wants to use an hour or so to do it.  I have until tomorrow to figure it out.  In the same basic area about 5 minutes from our office we have:  Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Toys R Us, Kmart, a Gamestop, and a local video games store.

So, I have a $1,000 budget on each kid.  It's going to be a blast heading to the adult candy stores(video game retailors) and buying pretty much anything.

I was looking for suggestions if anyone wants to make any on combinations of games with the systems(handheld or console).  The grandkids are a 7 year old boy, 2  9 year old girls, and a 13 year old boy.

Let me know what you think.

Great Suggestions so far.

Got some more info:
The 7 year old and one 9 year old live together.

The other two are only children. So, 3 different homes.

They all have the last gen consoles and the 13 year old "has a lot of hand held stuff".

It is near the end of the end....

Yeah well kinda depends what the kids have in the first place, no point getting another 360 or PS3 when they already have one, or 3ds if they have one, taking the budget for each kid into account, I wouldn't be surprised if they already do have that.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

Start with ordering PS4s on ebay, since you're unlikely to find one around town :).

My 8th gen collection

please do keep 4-6 games for yourself as a compensation :)

get them a tablet :P

3DSs/Vitas will do nicely for each and then just buy a bundle of games on top such as Tearaway, Animal Crossing etc. Maybe even buy a Wii U for each.

I need to stop buying games...

Go with WiiU ;)
I think PS4/Xbox One are more for mature gamers...

When you think my english is bad...sorry for my bad english,    i'm from Germany. And yeees, sorry, that we've almost destroyed the whole world, blahblahblah

I don't like the mix of children and video games, even if I had unlimited money to do say. Their small attention span and horrible taste of good gaming urks me. I played good games when I was a child... Why can't kids these days do the same?

They'll probably play Angry Birds or Call of Duty and proclaim it the best games of all time, so just buy a bunch of those.

Currently own:

  • Ps4

Currently playing: Witcher 3, Walking Dead S1/2, GTA5, Dying Light, Tomb Raider Remaster, MGS Ground Zeros

Amazon is your friend. You can buy everything in less than 10 minutes (*except for latest gen consoles, in which case you are going to have to go to Kijiji or eBay).

13-year old should get a PS4 or XBox One (PS4 with a Vita and a PSN subscription if I had to choose).

The girls should get 3DS's or 2DS's. You may want to consider a WiiU for games like Skylanders or Disney's Infinity, although I am not sure how much they would like / hate the gamepad.

The 7-year old would be tough. I think most of the games on a PS4 / XBox One would be too hard for him, but I can see him wanting it if he sees his brother / cousin playing it. Otherwise I would recommend a 2DS (for Pokemon) or a WiiU for Mario / Sonic games.

FYI, this is based on my experience with my own daughter and nephew.

Wii U for each household with:
Super Mario 3D World
New Super Mario Bros U (optional: Luigi version)
Nintendo Land
Lego City Undercover
Optional: Sonic All Star Racing
Optional: Disney Infinity
Extra Wiimotes

3DS for everyone with:
Pokemon X/Y
Luigi's Mansion
Mario and Luigi: Dream Team
Mario Kart 7
Animal Crossing for the girls (and maybe the young boy)
Zelda: A Link Between Worlds or OoT 3D for the 13 year old

Sprinkle in some Wii games and DS games if you need to spend more moneys. PS4/One don't seem to have many games for kids yet so maybe go for a PS3 if you have even more money you need to spend.

That is also a very good idea (the tablet, not the compensation).  A Kindle or iPad mini are kid friendly, and there are a lot of educational apps as well.
