No, you can definitely say that early adopters are marking the big MS/Sony published launch games higher, they went out and bought a 500/400 dollar machine on day one for those games for gods sake they have to assure themselves that they've made the right decision. Also I have watched a Ryse playthrough on Youtube and while I will not comment on gameplay (aside from the missing enemy variety, you either fight barbarians with an ax or fat barbarians with an ax, a shield and weird pointy nipplearmor), I can definitely say that this games' story is completely mindless, so sure the game is cinematic, but that doesn't mean it's good at it and I'd honestly suggest you to play the game again in a year after you've experienced more next gen games.
But anyway, while I don't think people should sheepishly agree with reviewers, I would still at this point trust their opinion about a game way more than a guys' that has just 1-2 weeks ago bought an expensive new electronic device just to play said game. You can go about finding games you like anyway you want, but for me there is absolutely no merit in user reviews for big next gen games at this point.

I liked the story. Cliche yes. Well Done absolutely. Theirs games out there that media say is a good story and well done. I bought these games based on the reviews and hype. And they were mediocre to a borefest. Theress story out there praised by people which are just as cliche as Ryse but far worse impllemented.
Rule of thumb? I dont trust reviews for cinematic games. Ive ben burned to many times. Gears Of War series the mdia say is passale story. I enjoyed that more than the gmes they praise for story. Gears 3 was amazing. So was 2. I love the story. Halo, best story in games Ive ever seen. Iv playd and completed yse 4 times already. Im still not sick of it. I stil havent played Forza 5 yet. I want to get 1000 gamerscore first on Ryse, nd thebest bit is i doesnt feel like a chore.
Best cinematic gae Iv played yet. Love it.
Also Really like Knack. After playing KZ and Knack definately reccomend Knack first. Thought i was really quite good.

Like I said, you can enjoy the games you want and are free to choose which games to buy however you want. I wouldn't pay money for Ryse since I find it looks very boring but if you like it more power to you.
That doesn't change that I feel that looking at user reviews for a next gen flagship exclusive title is a very dodgy way to judge a games quality so short after the consoles' and games' release.
And since you've told me your rule of thumb I might as well tell mine: Did I enjoy the developers past works? Does the games' aesthetic and genre appeal to me? What do reviews/previews/impressions of other people say about this game? And if available, did I enjoy the demo or find it at least intriguing? I'm a university student, I don't have much money and most of it goes into rent, food and occasionally booze (ok more than occasionally), so consequently I don't buy many games. Matter of fact I've only bought 3 games in 2013 and there is not one 2014 game where I know that I'll buy it for sure yet (well Persona 5 but I'll eat my hat if that comes to the west in 2014). This year the only games I've bought were Ni No Kuni, TLOU and Fifa 13 (since I got it for 16€ and I've been playing it with friends quite often) and I've enjoyed all of those immensely.
