Has it been done? It's not like they trick you into doing it. You get two options, wait two weeks and get it completely free, or you can put in a security deposit for the price of the console, and then get it back once it's verified that you sent it in. Also, you're looking at UK prices, you'd be paying the standard price of the console. I don't see any problem, if you can part with some money for maybe a week or two and you want it immediately.

mmmkay? lolwut? U have defective unit call MS/XB support u send ur xone they send u new xone... never heard of money exchanging hands...

I doubt it is true... Especially since MS has some major training with RMA last Gen with the RRoD and all... They might ask you for your CC info and to have the money available even though I even doubt that... But usually they send you a return box with the new one with a pick up you can set yourself...

but in any case if you want to know just go live chat with Microsoft store customer service employee on their website... They've been quite efficient with my needs in the past... Even with the twisted request I ask with all my international purchase .... Actually one of smoothest experience I had with customer service at least on the US one

I guess it was exaggerated like most things

and what hell is that signature lol :D

anyway I checked.... they do not charge you the unit... they do an authorization check on your account and you need to have the money on it... but they only debit the account if you do not send back the unit in 14 day time frame they give you.... this is a rather common practice actually... when I rent moving trucks they do the same with the security deposit... it's pretty much like any deposit you would do with a check except they don't cash it....

I find that to be a really small inconvenience to get a replacement within 2 business days.... especially since most account authorize an overdraft around 500 bucks by default unless you asked for lower or you overdrafted a lot in the past...

None of my friends have any broken x1's, but a few of my friends online did and paid nothing.

well this is only for the advance exchange program, which supposedly ships you a new device with in 48h before you ship the faulty unit back.... otherwise it works pretty much like the 360 with the RRoD

One of the reasons why I love Amazon. They'll send me a replacement right away free of charge, they then send a shipping box free of charge, and I also have like a month to return the damaged item. This doesn't seem all that bad though, but it's lind of lame that you don't get reimbursed for shipping AND they won't send you a relacement unless you have enough money in your account for another system.
