Judging by the appearance of the car they had to be going pretty fast. The Carrera GT hit's 100 in the time most cars get to 60. When you are going that fast it doesn't take much for a car to lose control.

Well for a car that almost costs $500K it should be a lot safer and handle a lot better even if it runs close to 100 mph.

Well apparently the accident was caused by mechanical failure, now things make more since. Roger, the driver, was a professional race car driver.  The power steering failed due to sudden fluid loss, the fluid ignited on impact, and burned the car to cinders.

100Mph, even 120Mph on large roads like many US ones shouldn't be critical for supercars designed to reach 190Mph or even more. But 911s have always been very unforgiving supercars, even after decennia of tweaking that increased their roadholding a lot, once they exceed their limits, particularly in case of snap-oversteering, they are extremely difficult to take back under control.

PS Ooops, I had this reply ready to send for hours and I hadn't read your last reply, yes, a failure makes more sense. Power steering failure shouldn't in general be very dangerous, unless the whole steering system fail with it, but if it happened during a turn it may have caused a behaviour irregular enough to make a car powerful and difficult (particularly with driving assistance suddenly out of order) like a Carrera get out of control.

Well according to the latest reports. They were only going 40 to 45mph and the speed limit was 45mph. Given he level of skill of the driver, it had to have been some sort of mechanical failure.
