Hi everyone
I was checking my stats and last time I posted something was way back on december,2010. That doesn't mean I stopped reading vgchartz. I always come back to read what's new every week. And now that we are witnesses of the start of a new gaming generation, i'd like to share my thoughts on it.
I pre-ordered a shiny white wii way back on november 2006. I was in college and I was counting every single day to get my hands on the new Zelda entry TP. That was the only reason I pre-ordered the console even though I had a Game Cube to play the game on. I had been hyped about playing with the wii-mote and it was really a novelty for me to think about the posibility of being able to slash your enemy or playing tennis on the now unforgetable system definer wii sports.
I was not dissapointed with the quality of Zelda TP or the fun I had with wii sports playing with my family. After that there were few games appealing to me. I ended up having most of the first party game jewels like super mario galaxy 1 and 2, SSBB, Metroid Prime 3, Mario Kart, and Zelda SS of course. A few other games like NSMB, Sonic, the resident evil 4 remake made their way to my library and I enjoyed them very much.
Three years ago I had the opportunity to buy my HD led TV and I had the option to buy a blu-ray player for about 250 US dollars or the back then new slim PS3 on a $350 deal with 2 games that I found at a SONY distributor store near me.
It was a no-brainer to me. The blu-ray sounded expensive compared to the option of playing games on the PS3. I went back home happy to have my first HD experience. The games I got included were little big planet which I thought I would enjoy since it was advertised as the Mario like plataform experience on PS3, (I only played that game for 2 hours and never touched it again) and Assasins Creed (same thing).
My experience with the PS3 as a multimedia device has been great ever since then. First I loved buying movies that looked so good in the HD tv. Then Netflix was introduced in my country. And then the feature I love the most is the app that finally let me watch music videos from youtube on HD on my TV.
I just bought one more game for my PS3 and that was Resident Evil 5. It was fun but to me not even close to the feeling I had when playing RE4. Maybe because that game was groundbreaking and not because RE5 was a bad game.
I was excited about the Wii U when it was announced. Never planned on pre-ordering it as I did with the Wii because it didn't have that AAA game I was willing to pay for.
I have the PS4 pre-ordered. Nop. It is not for me. It is a gift for my little 13 year old brother who has not stopped talking about it for months now. Again I don't find something on PS4 that I don't have on my PS3 like netflix and youtube and there is no game according to early reviews that feels like next-gen. I never thought there would be one at launch though.
I've never owned an xbox. Back then when I posted last time here they were the HD twins. The only reason I chose PS3 over XBOX was the bluray and I'm still happy with my decision even though I always wanted to play some exclusive games from them like Halo. I just played the first 2 at my friend's.
I remembered nintendo saying they didn't make the Wii a HD console because it was expensive back then and there was not enough HD tvs back in 2006. I think they were right considering the more classic 5 to 6 years life spam that they give to their consoles. SONY was so critized about his idea of having a 10 years plan with the PS3 because of the overwhelming Wii success. Looking at the numbers now it is clear they had a point. I also remember a microsoft executive (who later went to EA) saying that the Wii was a complement to the HD experience. That sounds right to me too. The Wii is the only reason why the new HD twins come from the very beggining with motion controls. They are not making that mistake again right?
I think I'm right when I say most of us don't have a next gen console yet. So... when you will be buying your next gen console? To me the answer is when I find something appealing from them. To me that will happen I'm guessing with a Nintendo AAA game (mario kart 8 most likely). About the PS4 and XBONE it could be a AAA game but maybe it will have to be a media feature and a good price point what it takes to close the deal.
I hope all of them are succesful. That's always healthy. And i don't think we have to have an only winner. I don't think we had and absolute winner this gen looking at the sales. There is a saying here, the sun shines for everyone...
