Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Brazil Nintendo Showcase: Wii U Launch

Brazillian Launch

Since i did not see any topic about this, i decided to create one. I will just explain a little and put the pictures. I hope i did a good job, it is my first topic here.

For those of you who didn't knew, Wii U hasn't came officially to Brazil until now. In fact it still didn't get here, since retail will only start selling it this friday (11/29/2013). To celebrate the launch, Nintendo made a event in São Paulo last friday and saturday.

The Wii U (imported) is being launched for US$826 , while XONE (assembled here) costs US$ 1100 and the PS4 (imported) will have a price tag of US$1800. It is said that in the last gen xbox 360 had 85% of the market share in the end of 2011, but it's hard to say for sure as many players import their consoles to avoid taxes (x360 is produced here). PS3 recovered some ground after that, because Sony started its production in the country.

THE EVENT

WII U

The event counted with dozens of Wii U/ 3DS for people to try out. Among the available Wii U games were Super Mario 3D World, New Super Mario Bros U, Nem Luigi U, Wonderfull 101, Pikmin 3, The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker:HD, Game & Wario, Ninja Gaiden 3 and others.

3DS

The 3DS had some games to try out too, including The Legend of Zelda: a Link Between World. There were also small tournaments of Mario Kart 7, Pokemon Y/X and some other games rewarding participants with various prizes such as shirts, cases, stuffed animals and more. Moreover, the mere presence there served to fill your Mii plaza with a plethora of new faces (and some really freak shadow links).

The event also counted with the presence of Charles Martinet (Mario Voice Actor), a cosplay competition (with a WiiU as the main prize and a 3DS for the second place, both autographed by Martinet) and 3DS Meet-Ups.

Too bad I couldn't go there. I live in Ponta Grossa/PR and I needed to work on Saturday. This sucks, 'cause it seems that the event was awesome!

Dunno what to display here, soon I'll know what to put.

Zombie Link? Da hell?

I hope that Zombie Link won.

I want to meet Mario irl!!

I believe Mario with Yoshi got the first place and one of the links (not the undead one) got the second place.

Could you tell me how Brazilians are reacting towards the Wii U, and the other consoles? Is the price making people consider Wii U?

Looks like quite the event. Do we know how many units Nintendo shipped to Brazil? If I remember correctly, Brazil has a population twice the size of Japan (over 200 mill?).

Hi, Can I borrow the article (and pictures), translate it to Spanish and publish it on my website?

It seems yes. People were really looking for PS4 because of XBOX politics in the beginning, but when the price tag was revealed a lot of people got angry and started to talk about boycott. There was no explanation for PS4 being 4,5x more expensive here, when the wii u, which is also imported, was just 2,7x (which unhappily is the normal factor because of taxes here). People started to consider Wii U around this time.

To be honest brazillians don't have a great history with Nintendo. PS2 ruled here in its time and xbox ruled for quite a while, although PS3 managed to regain some ground when it started being produced here. I just found out that my information on the beginning of the topic is old, xbox had 85% market share in 2011. It stills leads but ps3 had a big growth.

The good side is that there are still a lot of casuals here, who could be gathered by the wii effect, although games like wii fit and wii sports wouldn't have the same power here for cultural reasons.
