Forums - Gaming Discussion - IBUYPOWER SteamBox more powerful then XboxOne & PS4

The PS4 is about the same strength or a little stronger for $100 less. That is the takeaway here...

But you wont be able to resell your games, we all know how much of a big deal that is to gamers.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

This will be a niche market.

"Valve also says major AAA developers will be building games specifically for the SteamOS in 2014."

Does this means its exclusive to Steam, or exclusive for the Sbox? If it is exclusive to the SBox then that is stupid in my opinion.

Yes.. I'm calling it the SBox.

CPU: Ryzen 7950X
GPU: MSI 4090 SUPRIM X 24G
Motherboard: MSI MEG X670E GODLIKE
RAM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR PLATINUM 32GB DDR5
SSD: Kingston FURY Renegade 4TB
Gaming Console: PLAYSTATION 5

60FPS 1080P for all games?

ahahaha dont make me laugh. At what graphical setting will these games be running may i ask?

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

Uh... like the quote says, for SteamOS.  Which is really just Linux.
You should be able to run SteamOS, or compatable-enough custom blend of Linux on at least some non-Steambox PCs,
although I'm not familiar enough to say that EVERY PC will be fully up to spec enough to not have any conflicts.
If this works out for Valve/Steam, then expect PC gamers to be dual-booting/virtual-machining Windows+SteamLinux on their rigs,
to be able to play both SteamLinux games and Windows OS games... good times!

The Steamboxes themself have a wide range of hardware, it's not a fixed platform like the real consoles.
So just like Windows PC games, there won't be the degree of optimization you see on consoles.
Or in other words, Windows or Steam games will tend to be on the same level of optimizations as multiplatform games.
Windows/Steam is a software platform but the hardware is variable, so they don't really comprise a fully optimizable platform target like PS4/XBone.

the R9 270 is performance wise between the 7850 and the 7870, exactly where the PS4 GPU is at

the CPU might be stronger than the octa jaguar, but whether or not that directly results in higher game performance is yet to be seen and ofcourse consoles have the closed platform advantage when it comes to optimizations

And since its a PC you will be able to play games with the 360 controller :) and (with some software) PS3 Wii X1 PS4 and WiiU controller. (also retro stuff like SNES etc)

And no stupid "i am greedy so please pay for online" fee.

And infinitely backwards compatible.

re: BW compability, if you are buying an actual SteamBox those do not have Windows,
and installing and getting that to work may be complicated with drivers, etc.
otherwise SteamOS is brandnew so there is now BW compatability for it to do for itself,
although I suppose there is a few decent Linux games that will also run fine with it if you can install some extra packages over the network.

I don't get the complaining about 'pay for online' stuff with PS4 as the context certainly,
unlike XBone you DON'T need to pay for that for anything remotely connected to online
like Netflix or internet browsing, and in fact many F2P online games will not require it either,
the point of some games requiring it is that they are taking advantage of the server infrastructure
paid for by the online payment, which would need to be paid for somehow if Sony didn't run that.
Unless there is a reason why game devs/pubs seek out higher profit margin with paid online ala XboxGold/PS+
but for some reason are happy to accept lower margins when offering online games outside that format...?

New details on the various Steam Machines are coming out, and iBuyPower has just announced that their Steam Machine will cost $499.99, currently the same price of the Xbox One. More details past the link.

The iBuyPower Steam Machine will be stronger than the PS4 and Xbox One. All titles on Steam will be able to run in 1080p 60fps. The console features a multicore AMD CPU and discrete AMD Radeon R9 270 graphics card. The GPU by itself is $180. Valve’s Steam Controller will come with the PC/console hybrid.

The company says the system is bigger than the PS4 but smaller than the Xbox One. It will include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 500GB HDD. Valve’s new SteamOS will be running on the system. Valve also says major AAA developers will be building games specifically for the SteamOS in 2014.

To me this seems pretty cool, only $500?? i was considering getting a gaming rig this gen also.

The PS4 is still less? ehh, i guess but when you add 1 game and a only membership its well over $500 plus tax.

HUGEEE library of games,. Full 1080p 60fps for $499.99. If Valve can convince Square Enix to make Final Fantasy 15 and Kingdom Heart 3 for this machine, I won’t need a PS4 or Xbox One. I wonder if you can runb windows along side the SteamOS, it comes with a steam controller so im curious to how that is... anyways what about you guys? any plans to get a steambox next year?

Should i by this or just build my own PC? becuase many many people say building a pc is better than buying a pre built one

Your title lawl, are you really from the US?

1. "than" instead of "then" English is my 4th language and even I know this by now

2. its called a Steam Machine, not steam box, how the fuck do people not know it by now?

You still pay for the online though with consoles, it's an added cost no matter which way you slice the bread.

For example if you bought StarCraft 15 years ago, you can still fire it up and play a game on Blizzards servers even today, that's fantastic value for money considering there are no fee's for online access, I don't envisage doing the same thing with the Xbox 360 in 15 years time which by that point I fully expect Microsoft to shut Xbox live down for that console, like they did with the origional Xbox.

Steam however will never require a fee for online access because Valve doesn't control/pay for all the servers and bandwidth, Internet service providers pay a massive chunk of that bill by having servers near their content delivery networks in order to reduce costs, the benefit to the consumer is more redundancy and performance with no singular multi-billion dollar for-profit company in control of the entire thing.
For instance, Microsoft's closest server to me for Xbox Live is half a continent away, Steam? Less than 250km's thanks to my ISP.

If the SteamBox does take off, it will only mean more competition and pressure applied to Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, which should bring with it lower prices, more features and other subtleties, competition is always good.

Well, Backwards compatability is going to be limited due to the Linux based Operating System.
However you should be able to use DOSBox and Wine and play a large portion of games over the last several decades.
There are also emulators for things like the NES, Snes, N64, Playstation etc' for Linux too.

Great thing about the Steam Box *is* going to be the OS and it should support Mantle, that means console-like API overhead with a lighter Operating System than either of the NextGen Twins.
It might flop, it might not, but it's always interesting to watch a company take a stab at the hold that the big 3 occupy.

I don't expect the SteamBox to be sold in places like Kmart or Target though, probably online-only initially, if it is a run-away success then Valve may push for a larger retailer preseance. - One things for sure, don't underestimate the PC crowds desire to throw money at something they beleive in, look what happened to StarCitizen which is sure to have 40 million bucks in funding eventually.
