Forums - Gaming Discussion - IBUYPOWER SteamBox more powerful then XboxOne & PS4

New details on the various Steam Machines are coming out, and iBuyPower has just announced that their Steam Machine will cost $499.99, currently the same price of the Xbox One. More details past the link.

The iBuyPower Steam Machine will be stronger than the PS4 and Xbox One. All titles on Steam will be able to run in 1080p 60fps. The console features a multicore AMD CPU and discrete AMD Radeon R9 270 graphics card. The GPU by itself is $180. Valve’s Steam Controller will come with the PC/console hybrid.

The company says the system is bigger than the PS4 but smaller than the Xbox One. It will include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 500GB HDD. Valve’s new SteamOS will be running on the system. Valve also says major AAA developers will be building games specifically for the SteamOS in 2014.

To me this seems pretty cool, only $500?? i was considering getting a gaming rig this gen also.

The PS4 is still less? ehh, i guess but when you add 1 game and a only membership its well over $500 plus tax.

HUGEEE library of games,. Full 1080p 60fps for $499.99. If Valve can convince Square Enix to make Final Fantasy 15 and Kingdom Heart 3 for this machine, I won’t need a PS4 or Xbox One. I wonder if you can runb windows along side the SteamOS, it comes with a steam controller so im curious to how that is... anyways what about you guys? any plans to get a steambox next year?

Should i by this or just build my own PC? becuase many many people say building a pc is better than buying a pre built one

You're missing 2 big factors though. The average consumer doesn't care about PC gaming. And the people that do care about it already have gaming PCs.

i think that there is a market for people interested in the pc market, but don't have the time, knowledge, or money really get into it. I think the Steambox is a good alternative, and if i didn't but a ps4 already, i would think about picking one up.

They're gaming PCs with Steam OS. What else is there to get?

It's not competition with the XBONE nor the PS4, this Steam machine is just a PC. It's not a console. Just Steam is trying to expand their reach into a wider market, and have a "take" from hardware sales as Steam only does software at this point.

There's a point to steamboxes?

OT: I wonder how much more powerful this machine is compared to current gen consoles. I was going to build a new PC next year, but now I might just consider a steambox if they can make a powerful one for $750.00.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

if you define convince as paying $$$ then absolutely! since square enix desperately need kaching

What CPU?

About the GPU.

CUs: 20
SPs: 1280
ROPs: 32
Architecture: GCN 1.0
Clock: 1000Mhz
VRAM: 2GB
Bandwidth: 143.4 GB/s

Seems like the same PS4's GPU full enabled running at 1000Mhz (200Mhz more than PS4)... PS4 is based in Architecture GCN 1.1 with better bandwidth and memory size.

I'm sure this GPU will performance below PS4's GPU due console optimizations... Mantle will try to close the gap in the future but it is not available to SteamOS (Linux) and it have more overhead layers than PS4.

Conclusion: PS4 is stronger and cheaper.

WRONG WRONG WRONG I used the R9 270 X specs... not the R9 270... I will make a new post.

Their point. Gaming PCs haven't been this targeted at the average consumer before, and they've been too complicated. The point of the Steam Machines is to streamline PC gaming and make it more casual friendly.

I guess that's understandable, but will Steam OS have features for the casuals? Like Blu-ray capabilities or movie streaming? Or anything to set itself apart from any other gaming PC?

If Steam can secure third party games like Kingdom Hearts and its compatible with a non-awful controller (assuming it should be), I'd probably buy this over a PS4 or XBone.
