Forums - Gaming Discussion - If we can't agree on who won last gen, who lost it ?

Who finished last?

Wii 67 11.90%

PS3 212 37.66%

Xbox 360 283 50.27%

Total:562

Since we're talking about a war, we can't take simple console sales into the equation - we have to take multiple factors:

1) Console Sales: Wii won PS3/XBox Lost (right now it's basically a tie)
The 1m difference between the 360 and the PS3 is hardly enough to call a single loser

2) Software Sales: Wii/360 Won, PS3 lost.
Wii sold the most software, I believe - but it's games also tend to be cheaper. 360 sold almost as much, and 80 million more units than the PS3

3) Overall Profit: Wii won, PS3 lost
Wii sold the most units/software, and all at a profit. it made billions off of this generation. PS3 is still working to break even for the generation. (360 is somewhere in the middle, they are profitable, but nowhere near Wii levels)

4) Mind share - absolute: PS3 won, Wii Lost
PS3 ends the generation with the most momentum, Wii started strong but ended the generation with no momentum at all. WiiU looks to be another gamecube.

5) Mind share - relative: 360 Won, PS3 Lost
PS2 ended its generation the undisputed king, everyone was going to buy PS3, the other consoles were to be a distant second once again. This generation, the Xbox emerged as a serious contender, and is viewed as pretty much on par with Sony's offerings. Nintendo entered the generation an underdog, surprised everyone, was popular for a time, and then dropped back to to irrelevance.

5) Market share - absolute: Wii won, 360 Lost
Enough said. Wii sold the most units, 360 the least

6) Market Share - relative: Wii/360 Won, PS3 lost
GB and XB combined to be 1/3 of the PS2's sales. Sony entered the generation with all the momentum, all the top exclusive franchises, everything in their favor. They were expected to lose a small % of market share, but maintain dominance and likely keep over 50%. Instead, they went from around 75% to around 30%, and they might hit 35% by the time the PS3/XBox stop selling. They moved from a position of dominance owning a third of the market. Meanwhile Wii and 360 took that lost market share.

Overall, I'd have to say that Wii won, both in absolute and relative terms, it did the best overall. 360 is the runner up as it both had massive gains during the generation and end with plenty of momentum. PS3 lost, as they largely blew their advantages and allowed their competitors to actually... compete. However, they enter this generation with the most momentum to swing it back in their favor.

Its clear that Sony lost a massive amount of marketshare last gen(over the previous gen), so I consider them losers, though they sold very well.

After seeing how everything played out and how the industry has grown as much as it did, losing a lot of marketshare seems like it would have been a given.

Between PS2, GC and XBox we had ~200M sold. Now when all is said and done we might see over 300M for Wii, PS3 and 360.

The fact that the market has grown so much is why the PS3 clearly lost this generation. They went from a ~150 million userbase to a ~80 million userbase in a flourishing industry while Wii had zero third party support and the 360 had all kinds of hardware failures and costly online subscriptions.

Sony fucked up, they failed to grab the mass audience. They have really redeemed themselves with quality support later on and the PS4 will profit from that. In a broader sense though, no one lost this gen. There are only winners as I think all three companies are in healthy place right now.

The big issue with this argument that I keep seeing is that people compare 13 years of PS2 sales to 7 years of PS3 sales. Almost as if it won't sell anymore from this point on, even with exclusive software still in the horizon going into next year.

I am sure PS2 didn't have 150M when PS3 launched.

You are right, but it's not that relevant. PS2 was the marketleader by a huge margin when the next generation began, PS3 isn't the marketleader by a longshot now the next generation has begun. I'm sure the PS3 will sell steadily for the next 6-12 months. And that has helped and still helps the PS4 as well, as the PlayStation brand has regained its good image.

This generation, however, is over. Sony has failed to build on its previous successes, but gets to try again now. And I give them a very good chance to dominate the console business yet again.

Playstation lost when it comes to profit.
Xbox lost when it comes to sales.

Games are subjective so Wii lost when it comes to flavor. If somebody asks you to taste their Wii, don't do it.

i agree, mostly.

my opinion of who lost:

profit: PS3 (big time)

sales: xbox

games: wii

It's hard to say anyone "lost" ... they all "won" in their own way. If you're going to pin it on one though it has to be Sony ... going from 150 million PS2s to 70 million-ish PS3s after seven years or so is a pretty steep drop.

Lack of backwards compatibility and continuing software support should help ensure ps3 has a healthy tail end of its life. I am certain it will be more than just 6-12 months of steady sales. We will see.

Of course it won't be up at ps2 levels, but considering where it was just 5-6 years ago, it sure had a great rebound. Enough to brig great momentum into next gen.

We could argue that Wii was a big loser too since it ended up the polar opposite. Started great with record numbers, then failed to keep the momentum going and thus far has failed going into the next gen. Wii has basically died in the last couple I years while the "losers" continued to thrive.

There are multiple ways to look at each console here.

The Wii did amazing all things considered, but Nintendo certainly didn't pave the way for a succesful WiiU. Nintendo dropped the ball big time from 2010 and onward.

Wii won it is a fact. /thread.

I feel like the PS3 lost, and before some Sony fanboys start screaming at me about the PS3 passing the 360 in sales, let me say this: The PS3 is behind both the PS1 and PS2 in both total sales and marketshare. Meanwhile, the 360 came in and increased marketshare over the original Xbox by a considerable margin, and became a strong contender for 2nd place in hardware (and still holds 2nd place in software).

That being said, if you think about it, all 3 are losers, since the Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3 all lost money this generation. Who cares about who sells the most hardware or software if you lost Billions of dollars over the course of the generation?

I'm pretty sure the Wii was insanely profitable.

I agree with others, it really is this simple when you factor in EVERYTHING (predecessor history, profits, paradigm shifts, sales, game library, exclusives, online, etc)

Wii Won.
PS3 lost.
