South Park used to kill Kenny every episode. It was all part of the storyline. That's why the seeds were planted in his death episode. Hell, Stewie AND Brian died going to Vegas earlier this season. Death means nothing in cartoons.

LOL! when I was watching the episode I was thinking about your post!!!

Fans were losing their minds over something that was obviously not permanent. The guys at DC comics said (after the heroes returned) something like "You really think we don't know what we're doing with our creations? We knew they were coming back. The story is what's important and we knew how it would end before it even began." |
And the most important is that it created a sales spike. So they keep killing and bringing back characters simply because people really buy more because of this old trick. I'm pretty sure that Family Guy ratings improved during Bryan's death/return.

I'm more mad about the fact he was dead for just 1 episode after all this... i mean.. a bit longer like half a year or a year would have been nice..

I wonder if the Family Guy creators regret not making things go longer. Maybe it was a bad idea. Maybe not. The payoff of Brian's return felt kinda cheap. I felt pretty "meh" after the episode. They didn't really do anything epic with such a huge character death.
I think the Simpsons played the "Death Card" for their season premier and it didn't really kill anybody major. American Dad did the "major character is going to die" season finale once and like 100 people died but none of them were anybody of note. Death brings in the viewers. Hell, it was the biggest part of Gears of War 3. I can understand people being outraged but yeah. Happens all the time.
I think most people predicted this. I saw way too many posts on 9gag about Stewie finding his old self and the time machine, so I was not surprised at all. Brian was never a very popular character and the whole uproar for his death was ridiculous. People were determined to quit the show and now that he's back, they'll say "meh, the show hasn't been good in years anyways...." Well then why make a big deal about a show you don't like anyway?
At any rate. Glad he's back, as Vinny was just awful.

South Park did kill Kenny off "for real" in the episode Kenny dies. They kept him dead for a whole year before bringing him back but in Kenny's case I don't think it was done for shock value or to get more viewers. I think Matt and Trey got tired of having to kill him and leaving him dead allowed them to break out of this pattern.

I remember that. That's when they built the ladder to heaven! Lol! Great season and Kenny's death was pretty impactful. That was a death done right.

The ladder to heaven is one of my favorite South Park episodes! I agree that they really made the most of Kenny's death with Butters filling in for him for a few episodes before being replaced in a Bachelor-like contest by Tweek, Cartman drinking his ashes and getting posessed by Kenny's soul.
