Nay. Reviews weren't great but its still one of their better selling IPs.

Actually, there seems to be a bit of a misconception regarding that. When you take a look at the sales of recent Sony franchises across their platforms:

1. Uncharted: 17.91m

2. Gran Turismo: 17.78m

3. God Of War: 13.48m

4. LittleBigPlanet: 11.50m

5. Ratchet & Clank: 10.59m

6. Resistance: 8.98m

7. Motorstorm: 6.76m

8. Killzone: 6.40m

The franchise is actually 8th in terms of overall sales. To give you an idea of it's popularity, Heavy Rain sold more copies than Killzone 3. It's actually not a very big franchise for Sony, but they market it and showcase it like it is.

My guess is that the games are profitable and Sony is hoping that GG can create a hit with one game in the series that will propel it upwards into a more mainstream FPS audience, leading to much higher sales. I like Killzone, and GG is undeniably talented with hardware, but perhaps there should be a shakeup at the studio and a some different managers should step in to create a different sense of direction. They've been working on the same franchise for 9 years I think. It's too long. Thankfully they do seem to be working on a new IP in a new genre. This will be GG's moment to shine, hopefully they step up or the productivity and worth of the studio may be called into question.

We also have to wait to see how KZ:SF performs.

1) You're ignoring Killzone is closer to the top than the bottom. Sony had a lot of flops this gen.

2) The original Motorstom was heavily bundled, Pacific Rift had modest sales, Apocalypse was a flop.

3) The original Resistance was heavily bundled and saw a huge decline with Resistance 3.

4) Ratchet and Clank has little potential to sell millions like it once did.

Killzone is arguably Sony's 4th or 5th biggest IP right now. Its a series that still has potential to sell millions with each release major release, while some of other IPs you mentioned can't do it.

Shadowfall had very strong pre orders. The series has a strong following, GG just needs to deliver a great game.

Closer to the top? There are no other big franchises with sequels from Sony below it apart from Infamous (only 2 games), sports titles like MLB and a few casual titles. It's nowhere near close to the top, it's close to the bottom.

You have to take into consideration the expectations, marketing and size of the games. Comparing a title like Killzone 3 to PS All Stars or Starhawk for example is meaningless, the difference in production costs and resources is gigantic. Guerrilla Games is the second largest team out of Sony's 17 production studios. A studio 1/4 its size sold twice as many games last gen (MM).

Arguing if it's their 4th or 5th right now, is rather redundant. It may be 4th or 5th at this very moment in time, but why look at a static picture? There's data available for the past 7 years. We've yet to see the legs of the new KZ and of course the upcoming impact of the rest of Sony's ww studios efforts. Also, some franchises that were seeing fatigue last gen (ala Ratchet or LBP) may actually see a resurgence of interest on new hardware.

I agree with them needing to deliver a good game. Just perhaps not a Killzone game.

Killzone was never a noteworthy franchise in gaming. I'm glad the guerrilla games has most likely ended the series because the investment to it was not worthwhile. Here's to hoping that guerrilla games can get a 5+ million seller with the AAA budget.

If only games should be made that are amongst the best of their genres then 99% of the games would not exist.

I'm genuinely surprised at how many people just blindly follow the reviews especially aggregate ones like Metacritic. Killzone:SF is a very pretty game that genuinely shows off the next generation in a great light. While my largest complaint as an experienced gamer, Would be that I can tell that the campaign mode was short-changed at times to sacrifice making it as a launch title, I wouldn't say that it hasn't been an enjoyable experience so far though. It's a quality launch title that's actually impressed me in a lot of ways and it plays better than ever on the Dualshock 4. I would say it's a better game than Killzone 3 in many ways (More fun, superior multiplayer) but doesn't have quite the same luster as Killzone 2. (Which what do you expect for a launch title)?

In terms of multi-player, I'm enjoying it a good bit more than Battlefield) on consoles. It's simply fun and satisfying, the maps are good for the most part.

I'm truly curious how reviewers poorly rate Killzone's campaign considering how atrocious the campaign modes for Call of Duty and Battlefield typically are -- Yet are given a pass. A game like Killzone doesn't get a pass though.

I would use exactly that point against you and your list of Sony exclusive franchises. Ratchet & Clank may have higher overall sales this past gen, but 3 last games in the series were flops, same with Motorstorm which had the benefit of being a launch title which inflated its numbers, Resistance the same, last games in both those series underperformed heavily compared to their prequels. Killzone's sales although with only two games stayed consistent 2.91 for KZ2 and 2.5 million for KZ3, even though a slight decline is nothing compared to 1.32 vs 2.37 for Resistance and 0.38 vs 1.26 in the case of Motorstorm. Both of those latter franchises are also pretty much good as dead at this point. Sony said themselves they have no plans for Resistance after Burning SKies, Evolution Studios have DriveCLub in development now, no word on Motorstorm recently. So I would hardly classify them as bigger than Killzone.

I also fail to see we could expect a big resurgance in Ratchet don't see any indication for that, LBP is in my opinion pretty healthy, no need for resurgance, but I can imagine fatigue if they won't change the formula for the PS4.

I agree with your second paragraph though.

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

As I said before Killzone is an IP that can potentially sell a few million units with each release. Not many of Sony IPs can do that even if they poured more money into them.

I think it makes sense to continue the series. If Sony feels GG could be better used working on a new IP, perhaps they could put Killzone in the hands of another studio. Maybe some other studio can put together a better campaign and multiplayer.

Hence, Sony can build a better Killzone and work on a new IP.

It seems like on this thread most people are basing of Killzone's success on KZ3..which was below expectations. But ignoring the fact that KZ Shawdowfall has huge potential to be successful after its huge launch week in just NA. By the same logic infamous secondson shouldn't even release because infamous is one of sony's bottom franchises.

Sony already has a FPS franchise to compete with Halo.

It's called Halo Destiny.
