Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony’s PlayStation 4 Costs $381 to Build

So nobody actually worked hours to assemble this... Free labor? And the R&D for like what, 2 to 3 years + all the very high paid executives/engineers/blahblahblah working on the dev.? did not cost a penny? Storage, shipping, support team (esp. with these "0.4%" failure rate lol), etc...

If 381$ is what the hardware only cost, then they are losing money on each unit for sure...

ALonside PS+ they're probably making a small profit. The PS4 itself will probably be profitable by late summer 2014 if it keeps selling at a high rate.

A few weeks ago, I made a rough estimate here in some thread around $390 manufacturing costs. So I like this teardown much better than the idiotic "Sony makes $100 on the PS4" teardown posted as another thread a few days ago.

There is no profit here. It costs money to put the parts together and ship them

Yeah right...
They don't charge every territory $399 you know, they might be selling the console for that price in just the USA, but the average selling price world-wide is probably higher than that.
They're charging people in my country $549 for instance, with no logical explanation on why other countries seem to always have a higher price

Retailers also getting a cut. Probably very small, but likely at least $10 per console.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

This is clearly about hardware specs only...jesus, cant you read the title of the thread?

It's almost like the thought of Sony profiting on a sold machine makes you angry...hmmm

the tear down costs are inaccurate, manufacturers get them much cheaper than that but i guess its a good barometer though

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

He says a lot of stuff.

OT: Sounds a tad low, if you factor in R&D, distribution and advertising, the price is probably well over 400$ out of the gate.

I always wonder about things like this. I mean "There’s the hard drive from Seagate ($37),". Where did this $37 come from, cost price of a general unit?

Sony are a large hardware manufacturer with very good relations and partnerships with companies. Would surely do a deal saying "We are going to be putting your HD in millions of consoles." and then negotiate a price based on amount of units. So $37 might be $30.

Hmm, pie.
