Forums - Gaming Discussion - The guy behind Star Citizen is a complete dick imo

Wow, what an arrogant asshole. People like him give indie developers a bad name.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

You're talking nonsense

He is simply saying that he'll bring the game to the consoles ("support their platform") if he can follow the game model he wants. That model is constant updates without having any interference from the console makers. He's okay with it being a slightly broken hardcore PC game, because that's what the fans have paid for

While I normally hate indies and I hate most Star Citizen PC snobs, I don't feel that Chris Roberts is one of them, this quote has just been taken out of context. He just wants to do specific things with the games that the closed console platforms would prevent

Phil Fish still has him beat.

This.

Part of me feels bad for Phil Fish and the other part of me feels like he deserves all of the hating he has recieved.

Who cares aslong as he makes good games he can be an asshole for all I care.

In this article he pretty much trashes console gaming and then says "I would consider supporting sony and microsoft" as if they NEED his game. It's completely laughable how arrogant he is, when the entire game is being funded by people, if anyone needs support it's him. His entire attitude since star citizen became a thing has turned me off, I'm literally reconsidering supporting the official release of it because I find the guy to be such a dick. PC Elitism is one thing, but being so arrogant when you're game isn't even being funded by you is despicable, in my opinion.

I think he just tries to address the pressing concerns of PC elitists, that fear the game would be "dumbed down" if it came to consoles. After all a very vocal part of their contributers/community falls into that camp.

Chris Roberts first Origin Systems game, "Times of Lore, released by Origin Systems in 1988, introduced the action-adventure and action role-playing game formula of console titles such as The Legend of Zelda to the American computer RPG market. Times of Lore directly inspired several later titles by Origin Systems, including the 1990 games Bad Blood, an action RPG based on the same engine, and Ultima VI: The False Prophet, which used the same interface" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Western_role-playing_video_games#Golden_Age_.28late_1980s.E2.80.93early_1990s.29

Times of Lore, Wing Commander* (mainline), Wing Commander: Privateer**, Strike Commander, Starlancer.
(*one of the most popular franchises of the 90s)
(**one of the best games of the 90s imo)

You simply don't call this man a dick. He was inspired by others (such as Dave Braben and - who would have thought - Miyamoto) and he inspired others. Unlike some other veteran designers (his even more famous ex-colleague and Origin Systems co-founder Richard Garriott or Bullfrog's/Lionhead's Peter Molyneux come to mind), Chris Roberts never sounded arrogant to me.

Roberts' crowdfunding success with Star Citizen is unmatched (currently @ US$ 27.7 mio), i.e. with the sheer scale of his latest PC project he already went where others - incl. Braben, Garriott and Molyneux - would never go today. Which also means he took more risks than others. If this project fails, it will be solely his failure.

He sees no reason to bring this huge game universe he's currently creating with his team to consoles as long as it won't be the same experience as on PC. Simple as that.

Yeah he comes across as an elitist dick BUT he is one of the very few developers really taking advantage of the highest spec PC gaming rigs. Imagine if a big publisher like EA committed resources to a big budget PC game which scales down to consoles rather than scaling up how amazing could the graphics look.
