Didn´t sony already confirm that they will make a small loss initially but that it won´t be anywhere close to PS3? I believe I read it somewhere.

Poor Sony. If they lost $240 on my PS3 60GB console, they've never ever made a profit off of me this entire generation. I don't have enough 1st party games to cover that amount of money, no PS+, just one extra controller and no other accessoiries whatsoever. I also never replaced it with a Slim (because it never broke). Puts things into perspective, how on Earth they could've greenlit this is beyond me. |
Even worse, there are people who buy consoles, break them and post the video on youtube. Or use it as a blu-ray player. Or use its parts for a super computer (didn't the us army buy thousands of units?). Sony must be aware of that. They are also aware that there are millions of hardcore fans who buy many games they never even get around playing. They're still not enough, but they did help the company from going bankrupt.

I had a friend during uni days that worked at a major retailer in Portugal and they would count PS3 sales very highly. It was a great day when they sold 3 in one day (on the store she worked in). So yeah... not only they make money, as they make alot. |
Yup. Still remember the saleman's excitement/enthusiasm when I bought my ps3 slim in 2009 at HMV. It was an exclusive bundle with Batman (Asylum?).

I'm talking about Murica. The region where we're making cost breakdown comparison.
After reading the various opinions and points, I quite think that they could possibly lose a few $ in USA and earn a few € in EU initially. Not a $100 profit, but light years better than PS3's initial situation. This is also coherent with the prudent performance leap from 7th gen and after so many year from its launch and with the prudent design choice of basically making a streamlined PC with a few well aimed customizations.
