Forums - Sony Discussion - so 8GB of ram..... and a faster Disc drive.... so why a 50GB install per game?

Ever heard of the term "seek time"?

Let's not even talk about noise, heat, power draw - you know, all those unimportant details that make people use hds and ssds instea of blu-ray drives...

The PS3 disc drive was slow as shit but it could still play games off the disc.

The PS4 has an even faster disc drive but no game can play off the disc now? Not a single game? Are we playing stupid or something? That was obviously a design choice.

Maybe by making it mandatory they are future proofing so when the games get big/detailed enough that just running on the disc won't cut it we don't then have to deal with the growing pains of developers slowly requiring installs.  That's all I got.

The systems might have 8GB of RAM, but we don't know how much RAM is used for the game.

I think there will eventually come a time when developers are able to reduce the size of the install yet maintain a fast load time.

The 500 GB HDDs are no where near enough, I imagine a lot of users will have to upgrade to at least 4 TBs. As long as they give you the option of upgrading the HDD to something like 20 TB within the next few years thats fine. Some of the PS3 load times were disgusting to be fair.

Does the Playstation 4 use 3.5" drives or 2.5" drives? It would suck if it's only 2.5" drives that were only supported... Generally they are slower, more expensive and smaller than their larger 3.5" bretheren.

Yeah, we all know this. Like we know they are smaller and need less power, also noise is lower.

That must be up to the developer. Sony is not at fault here.

It uses 2.5" drives, but according to this:

The drive is ungradable to various sizes. Although I didn't even know 12.5" drives existed.

not 12.5", they mean 12.5mm in height.

What a joke, i buy a disc to save hard drive space but for some reason you have to install everything on PS4. Knack is 37gb for example, i mean what the hell? I though 500gb would have lasted the whole generation. I guess not. I want them to go back to when games didn't have to be installed on consoles.

Just do what I did with the 80GB PS3 or 60GB 360--Uninstall what you're not playing.  They say (you know how they are...) that you can still play a game while it's installing so it shouldn't effect anything if you ant to play something you haven't played in a while.  At any given time, you could probably have 5-10 retail games installed and then still have room for other crap.

Every generation is a little less fun and brings diminishing returnns in graphics/power. I shouldn't have to upgrade a harddrive or get an external harddrive for a system I paid $400/$500 for (without a game included). I miss the old days of SNES and Genesis when you could pop in a cartridge and be good to go. I think I'll stick with PS3 for a while.

No, a drive three times faster would be sufficient for many games. Requiring all games to be installed was a choice made by Sony.

Wrong. If it was Sony's decision, the Xbone wouldn't have the same feature. It's obviously a workaround like Joethebro explained.

Its obvious it was a design choice on the X1 as well.

Lets remeber a few months back, the X1 discs were supposed to be a one time install so playing off the disc was never the plan for MS.
