Cell phones are nowhere near close to putting out the same level of power as a console.

The power of the Cell phone has more than doubled every year for the past 4 years.  So, 4-5 years from now, the will probably have more than enough power to handle most games.

With that said/ I wasn't speaking only to smartphones, I was also talking about tablets.

If the amount of power in the ps3 or 360 could be fit into the size of a phone on top of battery and speakers, why don't we have ps360 slims the size of iphones?

Protip: Phones cannot even emulate ps2. The best they can do right now? psp level.

The samsung galaxy s4 uses the bolded. 51.1 Gigaflops.

The ps4?

1.8 TERAflops. That's more than 35 times more powerful.

PS3 is 215 Gigaflops. Still 4 times more powerful.

Ps2 is 6 Gigaflops. The most expensive brand new most powerful phone is less than 10x stronger than a console designed over a decade ago, and outclassed by a console made almost 8 years ago.

I didn't say that todays cell phones could do this.  I was speaking of the cell phones coming out in the fall of 2015(2 years from now).  You are comparing something that isn't relevent - emulators.  I never said that the games would be run on emulators, I said they could be ported to them.  If you look at the A7 processor found in the latest Iphone, it is using a 64 bit architecture and is quite powerful.  Is it PS360 powerful?  No.  But 2 years from now is a different story.

Way to dance around the point. Is that a salsa, or are you just twerkin it?

You said that phones doubles in power every 5 years. If the current most popular new phone is 60gigaflops, then in 5 years, it'll be 120...which is coincidentally what the 360 is capable of. Now then, to reach ps4? By the 5 year standard, it'll be approximately...let's see 120..240..480..960..1800....25 years.

Not including factors like some kind of miracle breakthrough in batteries and CPGPUs.

But anyways, since you've now retreated to your tablet haven (where you might actually have a point)...again, we're looking at battery issues as well as overheating issues and the problem with die shrinking slowing down. You simply cannot keep shrinking on a stable rate.

The next breakthrough in terms of computers is quantum. Until that happens, do not expect phones or tablets to match a console, because as you may have guessed yourself, there will be new consoles too.

Superchunk was right about one thing. Android consoles will appear. Conversely, MS and Sony, and now Steam will offer major competition. Why buy a system that plays the same games as your phone/pad when you can play something else? The market just doesn't make sense.

I stated this would happen over a year ago in various threads I created. This is why I was right and why XB1/PS4/Wii U have so much focus on non-gaming aspects, especially XB1. They are adapting to this ecosystem where they will require full media/entertainment/application support. Where gaming is simply one segment of the experience. This is also why Steam is putting out steamboxes, they need to move out of PC space to front room to remain viable.

Tottally agree with you, I just think that PCs and tablets will fulfill that role of home media/app/entertainment support. I don´t see consoles fulfilling that role, specially when it´s possible to do everything you do with a console on a PC, and get the games at a cheaper price. Of course, I am just speculating here. I may be wrong.

No dancing, just you misreading.  I said that phones double in power EVERY year.

You are not the only one to bring up the battery issue.  If your console is plugged in, why can't you plug in your smartphone/tablet?  I have a Surface Pro tablet that I utilise all day hooked up to a full keyboard and mouse and monitor.  When I want to be portable, i just disconnect it.  The Pro has an i5 processor that runs most every game I download from steam with no overheating issues.  This was a first gen Surface Pro.  I just bought the 2nd gen Surface Pro for my son and it is considerably faster with 8gb of ram and a better GPU all in a 2 pound tablet.  This is 2013 technology and products.  You don't think that in 5 years with the whole technology industry seeing that the market is moving towards tablets that we won't see tablets that can be even more powerful?

Many of the people frequenting this site are too busy playing games to see that the technology is already there.  It is just a matter of prices coming down over the next few years to make it go mainstream.

It is near the end of the end....

Tablets and smartphones are not the future!

I'm currently using my iPad as I write this and the only thing I use it is to go online and to play simpsons tapped out lol.... I never play anything else on this

Consoles have been going away since atari.

I disagree with this view of the future.

The main problem beeing the controller issue. While we have touch controls, gamers wont embrace it. If it has a controller, average consumers wont embrace it.
If it has a seperate controller, it will no longer be portable and will be competing with your TV.

Another problem is the price of games. These platforms have had some sucess cause the games are all really cheap or free to play. Big budget productions cant be supported by these platforms. Do consumers still want those? If yes, consoles continue to exist. If not, consoles dont have further use. I prefer to think that given the sales numbers of GTA5 that people still want big productions. Consoles are here to stay.

What i do see is that there wont be anymore need to upgrade console in this or the next gen. They will be systems that stream over the internet, as much as i dislike it, i can see it happening.

Your thoughts are in line with me OP, there won't be dedicated gaming consoles anymore in 4-5 years. After this generation is over in about 8-9 years, the TVs themselves will do what the consoles, satellite box, vcd/dvd/blu-ray players do with features like internet, voice control etc. Every thing will merge into one dedicated platform. That will be the end of the console wars.

In other words, you singlemindedly will determine the future of electronic entertainment.

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

No. There's so many things wrong in the OP.

1. Power consumption.
2. ARM's top tier GPU in five years won't be anywhere close to PS4's lol.
3. By time the PS5 released the gap would become even wider.
4. Bigger chips with bigger power consumption will advance just as ARM has, albeit at a smaller rate, the graphic standards at which PC Gamers and PS5 gamers will be accustomed to will make mobile platform's GPU's, which should only be JUST above PS3 level IF you ignore the power consumption, look outdated.
5. Controllers.
6. Casuals who game on dedicated home consoles will not stop gaming there to game on phones and tablets, mostly because tablets are used for mini-games, unless you mean the Wii Crowd, who're already out of the fray.
7. The Cloud? lolno
8. Local hardware will always be more efficient than the cloud and will always be what the consumer wants, the cloud has to allocate a certain amount of resources to the user, and with the power draw, I imagine the cloud being a more expensive and dangerous endeavor, now, when google fiber becomes the norm, it could theoretically enhance the PS4 and Xbone's graphics and whatnot, but not for free as they would once again have to allocate resources in the cloud, which costs the company, which financially makes no sense unless they charge for it.

Opens browser to Vgchartz. *puts on glasses* Reads OP....Wii U discontiued?...Nintendo going 3rd party?...PS4 and Xbone taking over immediately despite their high prices and limited software choices?...Tablets and smartphones taking over console space? Really? Really? The question isn't "Are you high?" It should be "How high are you right now because this post is definitely from outer space?
