So this is one of those threads ?

Yeah, the Wonderful 101 didn´t flop to apocalyptic proportions and the 3DS didn´t see Kid Icarus: Uprising.

I hate this type of thread because:

-the thread creator ignores the many new IPs Nintendo made (W101, Elite Beat Agents, Jam with the Band, the Wii stuff,Pandora´s Tower, The Last story, touch generation games  etc.)

-ignores the sequels to series that didn´t have a new entry in close to a decade (Pikmin, Luigi´s Mansion, Kid Icarus)

-acts like new IPs are  better on principle than games with known characters, even if the new IP´s gameplay is  standard fare for the genre

-put´s the blame on Miyamoto when Miyamote just won´t shut up about retiring and wanting to move to new/smaller games.

Look at the PS4/XBone´s launch line up. Ryse appears to be a shallow 0815 hack´n slash game. Knack looks like straight out of the PS2/GameCube generation (in a bad way, from the gameplay perspective).

And the SNES stuff will never happen again, games need 60+   staff members nowadys. You could make a SNES game with far less.

Is it wrong to like sequels when the designer knows how to make a series whose game-play that doesn't need to be fixed yet the designers still adds minor tweaks in the game-play to keep it a little fresh? And the numbers show that the fans of popular Nintendo series don't mind the sequels and want more.

There's nothing wrong with sequels if people want them and they provide profits.

If your problem with Nintendo is their current IP's or the new ones that suit your gaming preference (Wonerful 101, Wii series, Nintendo land, and more), then what you want is another game system or Nintendo to expand and hire other developers that make game genres that suit your need.

Nintendo can let their experienced designers develop these new series and allow their younger designers take care of the older IP's, but some of Nntendo's old IPs maybe too valuable for these young designers. And if they do this, why would third-party developers need to exist? I'm pretty sure Nintendo's Skyrim, Grand theft Auto, or Call of Duty will not only be better but also more appealing to non-gamers and gamers who usually aren't interested in these games.

New IP is one of the major reason why I adore Dillon's Rolling Western because it's one of Nintendo latest IPs that show a lot of promise and hope to see more of in the futures.

What's hilarious is that Nintendo is extremely successful and the author of this article seems to think he knows better than them on how to make that cash flow continue.

Wii U will not have as many new IP's as the SNES ever. You are comparing a time when Nintendo was 5 years into the console market to now being 30 years in. They aren't going to just stop making games for their most popular franchises. It's like asking why does Square Enix make so many Final Fantasy & Dragon Quest games? Or why does Activision release so many Call of Duty's? Or Rockstar making Grand Theft Auto's? It would be nice if these companies diversified, sure, but they aren't going to stray from their cash cows. By comparison, Nintendo is a lot more varied in what they do.
What I don't get is when people look at Mario and say, "Oh, it's just another platformer", or "Oh, it's just another 3D game." There's only two ways to do a Mario action game, flat platformer or 3D open world. It's what's in the game that diversifies it from previous titles. And, if you can honestly watch the trailers for Super Mario 3D World and say the Cat Suit is the ONLY thing different about that game than any other Mario, then I don't know what to say.
Yes, new IP's are exciting. But, I find it funny that everyone says they crave new IP's, and then something like the Wonderful 101 comes out, and nobody buys it. Just like everyone wanted a "hardcore" game on Wii, and nobody bought MadWorld. X is the sequel to what was a new IP, and already you're saying you're just as interested in playing the next Starfox (which ironically runs counter to your premise of desiring new IP's opposed to old).

You my friend hit the nail on the head, just to add to the new IPs in the last two years we've had about 5 or 6 including W101 which is one of the best action games I've played when it gets going, the underrated Pandora's Tower, TLS, Xenoblade and two 3DS games which their names escape me. Nintendo are as good as they ever were in fact it could be argued that they're better now as they're doing things they would before, people just seem to focus on their big money makers while not looking else where and even then each 3D Mario differs heavily from each other with the exception of Galaxy 2. It's like people just look at the franchise name and nothing else and then will ironically say they want another main line franchise.

But new IPs just dont work!
xenoblade, amazing, but considered a flop.
W101, also.
sin and punishment..
maybe only party new IPs work: Nintendo land, wii sports, party...

Nintendo also said why: the first create the gameplay, then choose the character.
New characters just dont sell, so, they do new games and gameplay for old characters.

Let's not forget Pushmo/Pullblox...

There was a good amount of time where Pushmo was the highest reviewed game on the 3DS...

My gripe with Nintendo right now isn't that they rely on the same IP's; it's that they don't give due credit to their smaller and more niche ones...

Have a nice day...
