Microsoft are posting record profit in their entire history right now. Bing is gaining every year on Google and Xbox makes a lot of money on 360 generation.

So they change things why?

Because in this day and age, investors give a sh*t about the company. They only go after the easy money.

They go, buy enough shares to be relevant in investors meetings and try to force the rest to sell the assets that are holding back the Co. in the short term. That way the next quarter or fiscal year, the results will be better, shares will rise and they will be able to sell their part winning a lot of money. They don't care If that has a bad impact on the Co. in the long term, they've already made the money and moved on to the next project.

They don't care about mid-long term strategies, and the Xbox is exactly that.

But kowenicki could explain it better than I could.

I think a more likely scenario is that after this holiday season Nintendo's stock drops more...

Then, MS goes and scoops up Nintendo and announces it at E3 2014.

As for Bing... I think anything can happen there. Bing is like Pepsi to Coke... Google/Coke are the brands that are most recognized and loved, but Bing/Pepsi have appeal as well.

The difficulty in selling Bing or Xbox is how embedded they have become in other MS products and how you would deal with the patents that both have... Xbox is heavily based on DirectX which is MS patented and a huge part of PC gaming... Bing has a number of patents around search... And Bing apps are all over Windows 8/8.1/Xbox...
