Thanks for the article. So the development on X1 started only in 2012. Amazing how they managed to get the technical aspects so advanced in such a short period.

We don't know if the gameplay deserves the praise yet, but the graphical whores should really be pleased with what this games says about X1 architecture.

if i remember correctly xbox one development started at 2010. they didnt say that MS didnt work on xbox one by that time, he just says things werent clear about the new console at the time

"After changing the setting, art style, control scheme, development team, perspective and control scheme again, Crytek had one last major shift waiting for it: the switch to Microsoft's next-generation Xbox, recently revealed as Xbox One.

As Yerli tells it, this officially came along in 2012, fairly late in the game's development, but the team was planning for a next-gen shift much earlier. When the interface changes pushed back the game's planned release date, Yerli suspected that Microsoft would want the game to move to its next hardware."

I'd say 1 million is a pretty safe bet to approach profitability for that game. Personally I think it will do quite well with between 1.5-2.5 million sales lifetime.

Not so sure, with all the long development period + complexity of development (as in heavily relying on movie production techniques).

i wouldnt say its a safe bet, considering just how long this has been in development and how big the changes that happened during developmet. this isnt a game that has been in the works just for the past 2 years, its been much more longer than that and went under numerous changes. im not trying to be a party pooper or anything, just pointing out something some people tend to forget.

there was a thread that nsanity made a few months back about just how long the development of the tittle took, if i remember correctly the creator had the idea of the game back in the xbox and ps2 days.

Just because you have an idea doesn't mean you're actually working on it. But yeah I was basing it off of a lesser development budget which upon retrospect is probably quite incorrect. All things considered I have a feeling that MS has put this one up as a cost of launch (meaning they don't expect to make money on it but they have it there to help the X1 lineup and get more people to bite and buy one).

I'm sure all things considered it would probably take 2-3 million copies to break even (even more when you factor in as prices go down, so do the profit margins).

oh i just stated when the game has been in concept to just show how long they had the idea. yeah and i agree, maybe this one is put up as a cost of launch and maybe they felt this game can spwan a franchise and profit from future installments. overall though, its harder to pin point just how many copies this needs to profit. 1- because they are certainly going to have a digital version wich would make more money then a retail one. 2- this game will have DLC, if it has a lasting community that keeps buying the DLC it could actually make them quite a good deal of money, also arent there microtranscations? if so then that can be a huge money maker.

personally i wouldnt say that 3 million is needed. if i remember correctly 3 million is what max payne needed to break even. maybe between 1.5 -2 million would make them a nice profit, factoring in that a small percentage of these sales are digital. of course, this is just me talking pure speculation

also, if i find that thread nsanity made ill sure give it to you, quite an interesting read!

edit : found the article

http://www.polygon.com/e3-2013/2013/6/10/4395790/ryse-seven-year-development

That was a good article! So probably about 4 years + of serious game development and 3 years of much lesser development.

But yeah I'm just throwing out mostly random numbers for the break even thing because I truly don't know, I can only guess
