We've all been watching as Android has made its meteoric rise in the mobile world, and we have watched as the platform has surpassed the competition. It turns out that we may have been watching something more than just a new dominant force, but a truly historic feat in the tech world. According to new data, Android may be the fastest growing product in tech history.

I predict iPhone (not Apple) will go the way of the blackberry if the current trend for the past 5 years continues.

Android will just smash every other OS, unless someone does something radical about this. It's the new Windows all over again.

Apple is making 72% of the profit of the entire smartphone industry. Samsung is making 29% (from Android and Windows). Everyone else is losing money or breaking even.

Where is DS ?

That has been apple policy for the last 15 years, making more money with less people.

Apple appeals to the rich and those better off. That matters.

Android is a great product when combined with a decent phone (hardware). The OS on cheaper phones is a nightmare and turns people off.

Chrome OS is also doing very well. According to  recent NPD report:

Chromebooks accounted for 3.3% of total computer sales (some 175,000 units) to Apple’s 20.3% (-3% in Macbook sales) and Windows 58% (down from 62% same time frame last year).

Now even MS is "worried".

So ... Android's a like a supervirus?

I'm talking OS.

Also, blackberry also made a ton of money in its day. But when the new boy in town arrived they didn't bother to catch up with the iOS. Apple doesn't seem to be bothered by the massive adoption of android. And I can see them going irrelevant like blackberry in about 5 years in the smartphone space.

I don't see why they should be bothered. If you look at the graph you posted, you can see that iOS is the second fastest growing product in tech history. Every year so far sales of the new iPhone have increased over the previous version. The same can't be said for high-end Android phones, for example the Galaxy S4 was a sales disappointment, causing Samsung to focus more on mid-range phones.

Android is only so prevelant because it is free, so manufacturers throw it on everything they have instead of having to make their own.As you can see from the profits of each company, most people want an Apple or Samsung phone, with the rest going for something cheap. Not many people go out looking for an "Android" or "iOS" phone. Most decide whether they want high-end or low-end based on their budget, and the majority of people going for high-end (which has far higher margins) end up with an iPhone.

android marketshare in 3 years: above 90?

iPhone sales can increase all the way you want, if android keeps gathering marketshare, ios is going down eventually. The problem here is that you have a handfull of phones and 2 or 3 tablets on the iOS side, battling an OS fight against an horde of other devices. And if android is free, that's not a problem for google it seems. Thats also not a problem for angry birds :)

And I would like to see your source for the bolded. Because high-end phone on iOS means the latest from apple. 5C is mid range. High end on android means a plethora of devices.

So compare the sales from iphone 5S, with the sales of high-end android phones from: Xioami, Samsung, HTC, LG, Asus, Google, Sony, Motorola, ViVo, ZTE, Oppo, and that's enough to prove my point.

Nope, it doesn't. That's why android has been skyrocketing. It's not about a single overpriced device. It's about an OS that fits in every piece of hardware. Like windows many years ago.
