It matters when a consumer is choosing between 2 similar products. The PS4 and the Xbox One are very similar so when a shopper is trying to decide between the 2, resolution will be one of the deciding factors. Maybe it's not an important factor to many, but it is to some.

It does? What 1080p games are you talking about?

Most of the games out are sub 1080p and most of the games announced are sub 1080p. The only mainstream 1080p games on the system are Rayman Legends and Wind Waker HD. Only 1080p announced game is Smash. 3D World, DK, Mario Kart, X, Sonic lost worlds, etc. are all 720p at 60fps.

Wii had motion controls which was a much better selling point than better resolution. It also had a lower price. If the Wii had resolution on top of these (and 3rd party support :p) it would have sold way way more.
