Forums - Gaming Discussion - It is official, Xbox 360 has outsold PS3 worldwide

So VGC has the PS3 selling more than Sony has shipped? Reminds me of way back in the DS days.

Things would be so much easier if Sony didn't combine shipments (PS3/PS2 and PSP/Vita) as it really obfuscates things.

Me since the games were revealed, the fanboys since E3."

The thread title is incorrect. Assuming that there are more 360 sold to cusomers then PS3's, it should be:

"The PS3 has not outshipped the 360 yet"

fixed.

The thing is, going through all of Sony's shipment numbers, until the end of Q4 2011 (Mar 12) Sony had shipped 66 million PS3's. Then from Q1 - Q4 12, Sony shipped a 16.5 million PS2 + PS3's combined, and in Q1 - Q2 13 (end 30 Sep 13) Sony has shipped another 3.1 million PS3's.

So all up as of the 30 Sep 13 Sony had shipped 69.1 million PS3's, plus an unknown percentage of the 16.5 million PS2/PS3's sold in FY12. Now, in FY11 the PS3 shipped 13.9 million units and the PS2 shipped 4.1 million, in FY10 it was 14.3 million PS3's and 6.4 million PS2's, and in FY09 it was 13 million PS3's and 7.2 million PS2's. So the trend is that PS2 sales were decreasing ~50% a year. Therefore assuming that trend continued, PS2 shipments are likely to be ~ 2.7 million for the year, which should put PS3 shipments at 69.1 million + 16.5 million - 2.7 million = 82.9 million as of the 30 Sep 13.

For PS3 shipments to only just reach 80 million shipments as of the 02 Nov 13, then in FY12 Sony must have sold over 5.6 million PS2's, a figure higher than in FY11 which would be bizarre (a 10 year old console having an increase in sales without a price cut or major exclusive game release).

To be honest, having gone through the numbers, I can't get my head around Sony's press statement. Either there was a major re-adjustment that wasn't reporting in Sony's consolidated result releases over the years, or Sony is just being conservative with their latest press release (it does say reached 80 million, I could say I reached 80 million if I was actually at 80.8 million, I've still reached 80 million). I don't know, all that we know is that the two are close.

If anyone wants the quarterly data:

  PS3 PS2
Q3 06 1.84
Q4 06 3.66
Q1 07 0.71 13.73
Q2 07 1.31
Q3 07 4.9
Q4 07 2.32
Q1 08 1.56 1.5
Q2 08 2.43 2.5
Q3 08 4.46 2.5
Q4 08 1.61 1.4
Q1 09 1.1 1.6
Q2 09 3.2 1.9
Q3 09 6.5 2.1
Q4 09 2.2 1.7
Q1 10 2.4 1.6
Q2 10 3.5 1.5
Q3 10 6.3 2.1
Q4 10 2.1 1.2
Q1 11 1.8 1.4
Q2 11 3.7 1.2
Q3 11 6.5 0.9
Q4 11 1.9 0.6
Q1 12 2.8*
Q2 12 3.5*
Q3 12 6.8*
Q4 12 3.4*
Q1 13 1.1 0
Q2 13 2 0

Possible reason for the increased PS2 sales could be its discontiued production couldn't it? Maybe Sony told retailers that those would be the last shipments they'd ever get and since I'd imagine that there is still a market for the PS2 in some poorer countries, that maybe made retailers place extra large orders to have some supply.

Possibly, though that is unlikely given the sheer size of the increase. To put it in perspective, 5.6 million in a year requires an avg sales rate of over 100k a week. That's 4 times what the Wii u has done this calendar year. Can you see a now 12 year old console selling at that rate? And yes, the ps2 was cheap at the end, but it's no cheaper than the Wii that is more modern and could just as easily sell in 'poor countries', yet it isn't.

Same shipped numbers, difference in sellthrough, that's my guess. It's still strange that the PS3 has managed to sell 400k beyond the actual stock to end users though!

Always wondered where the announcement was.

The big question is: what is the girl on your sig saying afterall?

Well, this is a deperate interpretation. In actuality, this is probably Sony just confirming, like many Xbox fans demanded, that the PS3 has outsold the 360. MS used the word "reached," which mostly likely means they rounded up, seeing their shipments from just 2 weeks prior was only 79.4M. They have probably just reached the actual 80M, now.

Here, Sony uses the words "over 80M." I think in the past Sony has had .5 or higher and still rounded down. I could be wrong on that, so I'm going to guess its most likely ~80.4M. So, they may not be quite as far apart as VGC has them, but I would bet the PS3 is ahead.

Omg 360 reached 80 million 2 weeks earlier! Watch it get outsold this holiday with GT6.

At this point in either console lifespan, do people believe that GT6 will somehow sell a PS3.  I highly doubt any game really is going to sell thee 360 or PS3 at this point.  Instead parents will be getting these consoles for their kids based on a lot of conditions.  If anything, both the 360 and PS3 will sell pretty much the same in the areas where they are strong.

You only need to look at weekly sales and momentum over the last year to realise that theres no way that is the case.

while it sucks we have it soo overtracked,...

....finally a fucking number!!
