Forums - Gaming Discussion - It is official, Xbox 360 has outsold PS3 worldwide

The issue is a lot of us considered PS3 shipments already surpassed X360 earlier this year (let's say after Q2) and now it proved us totally wrong. X360 still enjoyed a small lead till 30th of October.

I am expecting a huge adjustment in VGC history again. LOL at the numbers...

Around the Network

both consoles have SHIPPED 80m 2 weeks apart, ps3 outsetting 360 by a large margin each week and has been doing so for a long time now, you do the math.

Sorry xbox fans.

Did you even bother reading the article? The Xbox 360 number is shipped to retailers. It means there can be 2-3m units on the shelves but not necessarily in the consumer's house. The PS3 number on the other hand is sold to consumers.

Sony may have Shipped 84m(for example) PS3 units to retailers compared to the 80m X360 that have been shipped. VGC tracks sold to consumers, not shipped to retailers.

I am a Gamer... I play games and not consoles. I have a PC and Console on which I game... I like games. End of Story!

Pffff.... I guess you are the person didn't read carefully about the article. That is "sell-in" numbers aka "shipment".

But I think this tread is talking about which console had the lead till the 30th of September or 31st of October. It is nothing about the future sales. I do believe PS3 will surpass X360 in lifetime sales, but it is not the main topic here. Maybe there are other treads about the lifetime sales.

The thing is, going through all of Sony's shipment numbers, until the end of Q4 2011 (Mar 12) Sony had shipped 66 million PS3's. Then from Q1 - Q4 12, Sony shipped a 16.5 million PS2 + PS3's combined, and in Q1 - Q2 13 (end 30 Sep 13) Sony has shipped another 3.1 million PS3's.

So all up as of the 30 Sep 13 Sony had shipped 69.1 million PS3's, plus an unknown percentage of the 16.5 million PS2/PS3's sold in FY12. Now, in FY11 the PS3 shipped 13.9 million units and the PS2 shipped 4.1 million, in FY10 it was 14.3 million PS3's and 6.4 million PS2's, and in FY09 it was 13 million PS3's and 7.2 million PS2's. So the trend is that PS2 sales were decreasing ~50% a year. Therefore assuming that trend continued, PS2 shipments are likely to be ~ 2.7 million for the year, which should put PS3 shipments at 69.1 million + 16.5 million - 2.7 million = 82.9 million as of the 30 Sep 13.

For PS3 shipments to only just reach 80 million shipments as of the 02 Nov 13, then in FY12 Sony must have sold over 5.6 million PS2's, a figure higher than in FY11 which would be bizarre (a 10 year old console having an increase in sales without a price cut or major exclusive game release).

To be honest, having gone through the numbers, I can't get my head around Sony's press statement. Either there was a major re-adjustment that wasn't reporting in Sony's consolidated result releases over the years, or Sony is just being conservative with their latest press release (it does say reached 80 million, I could say I reached 80 million if I was actually at 80.8 million, I've still reached 80 million). I don't know, all that we know is that the two are close.

If anyone wants the quarterly data:

Omg 360 reached 80 million 2 weeks earlier! Watch it get outsold this holiday with GT6.

Yes because it's the first GT on Playstation 3 and Xbox doesn´t sell on xmas.

/sarcasm

Always wondered where the announcement was.

The thread title is incorrect. Assuming that there are more 360 sold to cusomers then PS3's, it should be:

"The PS3 has not outsold the 360 yet"

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

PS3 is selling worst than I thought or it was overtracked in a long term. The situation is still worst if we count that it has GTA Bundle to help.
