None of that is innovative at all. Its progression. Natural progression. Sony had good ideas with the touch screen and added in back track pad. And two analogs? What the hell? Innovative? The PSP had a claw man. they literally added a stick. The craft design was craft

I cant seriously be reading Graphics as an upgrade. Fuck it  glasses free 3D is  just as much of an "innovation" in that sense I mean 3D is a graphics enhancer.

Im not even making the point that the 3DS overall design motive( staying with clamshell, but motivated by the increasing lurch by smartphones on the industry. Basically it evovled off their ideas for streetpass and various other feature sets that spear headed the design for it) but what is coming out of you is absolutely ludicrous.  The 3DS's hardware design isnt a safe bet. Thats for sure, Nintendo did a lot of stuff that could have severely backfired with the 3DS. But they got over that by bringing a first party line up of games that shits on the original DS's output quality wise.

Nintendo's absolutely brilliant when it comes to utilizing their ideas they get for software to make new types of hardware. The 3DS shows this in the internals with the streetpass/free to play games on it, the N64 showed this, the Wii showed this, the WiiU may show it eventually(but in the end that was made more as a response to how the third parties felt with the Wii)

I never said the Vita itself was innovative, i said it was a bigger change from the PSP than the 3DS was from the DS. I put "" marks around the word innovation for a reason :P

Anyway, you say i'm spouting rubbish but have yet to actually name me a single thing about the 3DS's hardware that could have "severely backfired" ^^ As i said, take away the lackluster 3D and upgraded graphics and you are left with a DS that has an analog stick. I hardly call that taking a risk.

The price. Going for $249 was a huge risk for Nintendo and it almost killed the system.

Not just the price, the system's innards, its quite different form what else is on the market. Very quirky device,like the WiiU its designed in a way that requires you to tap into the device to get the most outta it. Except its pretty different from the WiiU.

Nothing like the Xbox One and its esramn though. That's giving people a headache

And how is the Vita any different? How did Sony not play it safe? They upgraded their multi-media gaming device. It got no where near the sales the PSP did because it was unnecessary

Nintendo's strategy with the 3DS was not playing it safe. Nor was their dangerously bad execution of it The WiiU and the 3DS are both upgrades that are meant to carry on the spirit of their last generation systems.

The Vita was a far bigger change from the PSP than the 3DS was from the DS P: Massive graphics upgrade, 2 cameras, OLED touch screen, dual analog sticks and a rear touch pad. I personally prefer the 3DS as it's game line up is waaaay ahead, but the Vita was certainly more "innovative" compared to it's predecessor.

Would you care to explain how the 3DS wasn't a safe bet? Because from what i can tell they made a grand total of one risk, and even that came with an off slide :P Take away the visual upgrades and the 3DS is a DS with an analog stick (which is perfectly fine, because the DS was incredible).

I disagree pretty strongly with the notion that the PS Vita was a far bigger change from the PSP than the 3DS from the DS.
Your differences with the PS Vita vs the PSP are rather weak.  2 Cameras?  The 3DS has the same difference with the DS.  OLED touch screen?  I think you should just say "touch screen" as OLED is being phased out.  Dual analog sticks?  The 3DS has a circle pad while the DS didn't.  An equivalent difference from the PSP (having a circle pad thingy as well).  A rear touch pad?  Sorry, but I don't see there being many uses for that.  It may be more innovative than 3D, but not by very much.
So, no... not really at all.  The 3DS hardware has a good bit more than what you think in differences to the DS.  The jump from DS to 3DS is big, while the jump from PSP to 3DS isn't as big, and there is no denying that there was a bit of a closing of the gap with (PSP vs DS) vs (3DS vs PS Vita).

I fail to see how that is a risk though? Having quirky innards is hardly relevant to the average consumer. Sure the price was a risk, in the same way the Vita's price was a risk, but it's not a risk in the sense of adding a feature to the console itself that could actually effect it's fate (such as the WiiMote. Had that not been liked, the entire console would have drowned).

So please, name me one feature the 3DS has that could be considered a tremendous risk. The upgraded graphics weren't, that's expecting. An analog stick was expecting (though many hoped for 2). The 3D was lackluster to many, but can be termed off.

There is 1!!! and I've found it... In little big planet you use the touchscreen to push blocks into place and gears into machinery but if you want to push the gears back out of the machines to stop them you tap on the back touch screen to push it back towards you and stop the machine :o Ok this isn't a game changer but it felt like a really clever idea the first time you do it. (said this 1000 times tho, vitas OLED screen attracts fingerprints far too much to want to use it during "core" games)

Rest of your post is nail on the head right tho. I was going to reply regarding the psvita being a game changer because it has double the analogue sticks of the psp whereas the 3ds has infinately more than the DS :D even has double that again if you picked up the Circle pad pro for Resi evil or MGS3d

You neeed to read my words better.

I know full well Pokemon is still the uber crazy juggernaut, though as a former pokemon player myself I have found the last several iterations to be old, stale, and boring.

I was comparing the most recent PSP to the first Vita and most recent DS to the 3DS, as that was the actual generation jump (which seems fair, does it not?).

DSi -> 3DS

Things added - 1 Analog stick, 3D function, improved graphics.

PSP3000 -> PS Vita

Things added - 1 extra Analog stick, A "true" touch screen, improved graphics (along with a high screen resolution), 2 cameras, rear touch panel.

Why are those differences weak? We arn't debating which is better, mearly which changed/added more. If i'm not mistaked 5 > 3? :P

I know it has some uses in some games, but I can't see it covering many games.  I mean, the 3DS' 3D is useful in games where depth perception is important, but at the same time, not many games will actually be drastically changed by that (same with the reartouch).  I would rate the reartouch about as useful as 3D on the 3DS, just a little more innovative.
