I don’t know if we can consider Super Mario 64 as an open world game, but I think Super Mario Sunshine is more consistent with that definition because of the city and entire worlds to explore. Our main standpoint with Super Mario is to ensure that players always know where to go.

It’s for this reason that we have given great importance on the placement and visibility of the flags, particularly in Super Mario 3D World . Again, as creators, we want a large number of people to be able to play and enjoy the game, so it’s sort of our duty to ensure that the objectives are clear to everyone. However, if a very large number of players expressed the desire for a more open Mario, we would take that request very seriously.

I say they should go for it, a more open-world like Super Mario game. EAD Tokyo has done 4 linear styled games already, I think they should try out something new. We've never seen them tackle an open-world Mario game, and I'd love to explore the lands of Mushroom Kingdom. You heard Koizumi-san, let's express our desire to have a more open Mario game (those who want it).

According to this interview, that could be the case.

"Koizumi: Well, this is my personal opinion but I think that with all the experience accumulated by the teams of Mario or Zelda, it would be difficult to fully leave a key episode of the series to external studios. However, as we have found ways to collaborate on projects with other companies, it would probably be possible to do the same thing with Mario finding a truly talented and motivated team.

On EAD Tokyo moving on to a new project

Koizumi: I can not tell if it's a Mario game, but I can confirm that it works well on a new project."

Just stating that they're working on a new project, nothing here to suggest open world Mario really.

I know, that's the point. Their next project could be a new IP. EAD could be working on a new IP, this will be interesting indeed :3

Here a little quote I want for those to keep memorize in your head for this coming next gen.

I'm not sure I'd want that personally, I prefer the faster pace and tighter design of linear games, but from a sales point o view an epic Mario 64 type game on Wii U would be a smart move.

How do we get this thing going? Super Mario Universe, anyone? Please for the love of God make this happen!

"Games are a trigger for adults to again become primitive, primal, as a way of thinking and remembering. An adult is a child who has more ethics and morals, that's all. When I am a child, creating, I am not creating a game. I am in the game. The game is not for children, it is for me. It is for an adult who still has a character of a child."

Aha, got confused since the bolded part also stated "I say they should go for it, a more open-world like Super Mario game." Thought that was what you were referring to. Also, the google translation makes it all a bit weird.

New IP would be great though, didn't Miyamoto mention he was working on something new ages ago as well?

Nice to see Nintendo and Square-Enix share the same views of the world.

@bolded:  My sentiments exactly.  Galaxy and 3D Land/World are what I prefer for Z-axis Mario.

Don't get me wrong; I did love SM64 (it was hard not to) and a true sequel would still be something I'd look forward to, but the essence of Mario's gameplay is platforming that just works better with a linear design in mind, IMO.  This is why I appreciated Banjo so much - it never had its roots in 2D design previously.

Zelda's gameplay translates beautifully to 3D, but if Nintendo wants to do an open world 3D platformer, how about a new IP? (hint hint)

I want Mario Universe.

I want it to be the best mario ever.

that's all.

Those dont sell well.  Galaxy managed 7 million with mario on the cover. The other ones do way better. Super Mario 3D World outsould it

Just make an adventure game lol.
