Forums - Sales Discussion - X360 Software Passes DS in America

Does anyone know why it's so popular in the US but not elsewhere?

People keep going on about how the world hates America and won't buy XBoxes because of it but I can only assume that's nonsense as the majority of the developed world has Windows on their home computer. Secondly, if you asked the average person in the street in Europe where Sony came from I expect they'd tell you America too. People tend to assume that all big companies are American becasuse most of them are.

I think the RRoD has seriously damaged sales outside America but that doesn't explain why it isn't damaging sales inside America to the same extent.

Maybe it really is the case that the US and UK like shooters and the rest of the world doesn't.

@Ferret.

Because people in Europe (or at least Norway) are 3 types:

1. People who buy Ps3 solely (well, not always) because they owned Ps2.

2. People who buy the most "popular" console, since lots of Europeans just follow the crowd.

3. People who buy the console that they think fits best.

Just shows - you can own the US, and still ( by some) to be considered a failure worldwide.

Without too much surprise, the numbers in Japan make up for the difference:

360 - 2.4m
DS - 92.4m

 Which, of course, has zero relevence to this thread as it's about America.

81.85/10.75 = 7.6 Attach Rate in America in 27 months.

Watch this soar up to and over 10 this year, how high can it go 15??

usually as they sell more consoles, the attach rate will go down

each new person that buys a 360 and doesn't buy 7.6 games right away lowers the rate

 the thing going for 360 is slow steady sales in US instead of fast sales, which allows people more time to buy games so a higher attach rate...if it starts selling faster after a price cut, then attach rate will drop

Bets:Missed by 420k I bet leo-j vg$500 that wii will sell 31 million by 7/31/08.  Sorry, I don't think he has enough vg$ to make it with all of u that wish you could. Hit, with room to spare I bet kingofwale a 1-week ban that wii Americas ltd sales>360 Americas ltd sales as of the numbers for week ending 7/05/08 (using vgchartz homepage #s)

Predictions:

Wii will sell 18-20mil by 12/31/07  CHECKWii will sell 45mil+ WW by 12/31/08Wii will surpass PS2 sales WW by 11/17/11 (5yr anniversary)Wii Fit will hit 12mil sales in 2009MKWii+SSBB+Wii Fit+SMG > 50 mil sales by 2010 > gta4+mgs+gt5+ff13+haze+lbp

Wow! That's prob caused the the massive # of ppl buying DS's tho

Xbox does have the most shooters...and multiplatform ones that run better at this point. But its unfair to say that this is why people ar buying it. Thus far it also had the most RPG's, the best sports games, best online, more exclusives than PS3... hmm, wonder why its selling? Multiplatform games also sell better on xbox as there is assurance people will be online playing them, so this is one of the reasons 360 software totals are through the roof in NA...

There is no brand loyalty in America, they tend to go for the best product that does it cheaper...once PS3 delivers on the promises and is not so expensive, America will buy it as well.

And how does that help to explain why it's selling in America but not the rest of the world? :-s

The actual situation with games is pretty irrelevant. What matters is how potential purchasers perceive the library and the perception is that that the 360 is stuffed full of shooters.

@ferret1603

I think the last sentance of my post touches up on that...

I'm sorry but your posts last sentance gets me blabing as I play the 360 a lot and I hate FPS games. There is other stuff on that system worth playing...

I am pretty sure many of the earlier DS games are not tracked yet, alot of games like Advance Wars: DS have no data, and there are many others. Also, comparing handheld software to console software is about as unfair as comparing handheld HW to Console HW...

Compare apples to apples. Like PS3 first year SW sales to 360 first year SW sales.

Interesting to note that Wii software has passed PSP software.  Granted, Wii has a permanently bundled game, but PSP has sold many bundled games now too, and it has sold more hardware and been out for 18 months longer than Wii, while DS has been out only a year longer than 360.
