All this Nintendo news and half announcements are confusing me, and not only because I (and neither anyone outside of some Nintendo employees) know what they are up to, but because I'm not even sure that what they said during the DeNA collaboration announcement and the reveal of the NX are even connected.
To me it looked like 3 different announcements: 1-Partnership with DeNA to let them use their IPs to make mobile games; 2-Launch of a software platform that will be available for mobile and PC users but also owners of the 3DS and WiiU as well as the NX, although we don't know what this platform is for; and 3-The fact that they are working on a gaming machine to be revealed in 2016 that we ignore if it's a handheld, home or both console that we also ignore when will be launched. Heck, I've seen people saying that the X stands for "future path" so there may not even be a console but just the idea of what Nintendo wants to do with its next consoles.
So, because of all that, I'll try yo stay away from any discussion regarding all this stuff.

It was three announcements that go hand in hand, but a lot of people are unable to connect the dots because they either don't want to or can't be bothered to read the information that was provided from Nintendo directly.
1. The purpose of the partnership with DeNA is to increase awareness of Nintendo IPs. Nintendo likened smartphones to TVs, not gaming platforms. Therefore these mobile games aren't going to compete with Nintendo handhelds, but are there to keep Nintendo IPs in people's minds even when they aren't using Nintendo hardware. For TVs, such a project would be the Pokémon anime. But given how people use smartphones (only minutes at a time, but frequently), game applications that can be consumed in short bursts will be more effective than any passive form of entertainment. The goal is to increase sales of dedicated Nintendo hardware by maintaining a bigger presence in people's daily lives. Smart devices happen to have high daily usage rates, hence why Nintendo will be making games for them, but not PCs.
2. This was called a membership service which means as much as a unified account system that extends beyond Nintendo hardware. It also means that users can become invested into the Nintendo ecosystem before they even buy Nintendo hardware. Once again, the goal is to draw people to Nintendo hardware or keep them connected even if they are away from said hardware.
3. NX is new dedicated gaming hardware and the purpose of its announcement was to make clear what the goals of 1 and 2 are. More sales for Nintendo hardware. And since Nintendo isn't going to port any console and handheld games (new and old) to non-Nintendo hardware, there's a good chance that they'll accomplish their goal. The omnipresence of smart devices means that they can reach more people than TV ads, nevermind the added effect that the former will bring in money as opposed to the latter which costs money.

Everything makes sense, which unfortunately isn't that usual in this forum when Nintendo is involved.
The only drawback is that there might be some consumers that will be satisfied by those small "Nintendo Capsules" that they'll found on their smartphones and won't feel compelled to get a proper Nintendo console to get the true experience.
Please excuse my bad English.
