I don't know if it will match Nintendo's expectations of becoming the MK of shooters but i think it has a good chance of becoming successful. But it will really depend on how Nintendo markets this game.
So far, this seems to be a good idea.

It may not be realistic to expect MK level of success, but it could easily become a franchise on par with Pikmin or Metroid (in terms of sales) with the right handling.

That seems more reasonable.
Actually, now i'm not exactly sure if Reggie was talking about sales or just in terms of fun.
Either way, doing Pikmin numbers could happen.
I mean, it's a competitive shooter with a single player probably like no other. If Nintendo makes the MP as addictive as CoD, BF or Destiny, then it will ring a lot of bells.
Personally there's something that i'm not sure it can really work in the long run: shooters are really competitive in MP and there's always that tension created by the imminent firing possibility, you know? But in Splatoon that tensio basically doesn't exist because you are shooting all the time and its goal is not primarily the other guy/girl like your average shooter; it's the whole map, first, and then shooting your opponent.
Maybe i'm overthinking this and people will just like that mechanic the same way. At least i hope so. I really like Splatoon and want it to become successful too!
