Forums - Gaming Discussion - Hard Fact: 1080p requires over double the performance of 720p

But it does not result in double the real world appearance unless you press your nose against the screen or play on a TV the size of a football field. Most consumers will not even notice the difference.

This is simply totally false......and devoid of any knowledge of the topic..1080p and 720p, is a biggap, anyone with eyes can see the difference immediately. Every site, analysis, says the PS4 clearly looked better....are they all lying??  An image at 1080p is immediatly recognizeable from 720p, it is a lot sharper, more detailed and jumps out.

Even on my 32 inch TV mabny feet way there is a stark difference betwen the two.

If there was no diff the entire industry would not be aiming to hit 1080p.................

720p displayed on a 1080p TV might not look as good as on a TV that displays 720p natively (though it will depend on the TV, I daresay on some of the best it will actually look better due to upscaling)

Having said that, I agree that at 32 inch, most people should be able to see a difference between 720 and 1080 if they are closer than 10ft or so... difference is, when playing/watching, most people are not studying the screen for visual detail but engrossed a in a story or concentrating on playing. I will perfectly happily watch a film in 480p on my 768 line laptop instead of popping in a blu-ray of the same film.

It doesn't require over double the total performance, just for certain parts.

I play my pc games in 1080p and tone done other things to get better frame rates. Switching to 720p only gains about 20% in fps, plus sharper (native) resolution is always worth more to me then better AA, motion blur, dof effects etc. I rather have 1080p 30fps and see what happens in the distance then 720p 60fps with heavy AA.

Lol @ people saying that "most won't notice", "hardly noticeable", etc.
If it looks good, then it looks good.

If anyone sees both side by side, anyone will see the difference, especially on bigger screens. If anyone gets used to 1080p, he/she will notice when content before them is in a lesser resolution - or a bigger one.

There are many theories as to why this difference exists, and many theories as far as the hardware disparity goes, however, there is the fact that the PS4 is a lot more capable than the XBO. Expect the recent (and coming) resolution and asset disparities to be the trendsetters for this generation. There is no need to even discuss hardware power at this point - as soon as specs were released, it was clear that the PS4 is the more powerful console out of the two.

The bottom line for whoever buys whichever console, however, always lied in the games offered. Should someone mostly (or only) care for multiplats, it's obvious that both the cheaper and superior PS4 should be his pick. That's the point made here - and both the media and gamers shouldn't downplay it as an insignificant difference. Last gen the X360 was the preferred console for multiplats. Did the media and people downplay it? No. Even if the difference was far, far smaller than twice the resolution. Don't downplay it now, either.

Keep telling yourself that.....You dont need to look for differences, 1080P and 720p, is a major difference in image quality. A quick look anyone will see it period.

Say Johnny Casual goes to a mate's place, plays Ghosts on PS4 at 1080p, then decides to buy it for his Xbone. When he boots it up on his TV in 720p, he's not going to go, "OMG, this looks sooo much worse!"

He will see a difference yes...it is twice the detail. Stop exaggerating, he won;t say OMG it looks horrible, but the image will be degraded and it will be very noticeable...............A quick google search on 1080p and human eye sight will tell you this.

There's a difference between what the eye can percieve and what people process. We're constantly seeing an entire field of vision, but we can completely overlook something in our view if we're not concentrating on it. Casual gamers will not be looking for tiny details, or aliasing on polygon edges or thin geometry, it won't even occur to them to look for it.

You really think non-hardcore gamers are going to compare them side by side?

What part of "You wont need to be looking for every detail or analysing everythig to notice" do yoo not understand. If you see an image at 1080P, then 720p, anyone will immediately see a lower iimage quality, it is very notiveable. Anyone saying otherwise is indenial or simply out of touch.

The image from top to bottoom will look less sharp, detailed and 1080p displays more real estate.

Go to many of youtube's comparison videos on various games, and see the comments, generally made by your typical teen mainstream gamers, just for one common example.

But non-hardcore gamers are not going to put the PS4 version and the Xbone version on TVs next to each other to compare, or anything like that.

Seasoned game analysts have played next gen games and still haven't been sure if they're looking at 720p, 900p, or 1080p, and casuals are even less observant about these things.

i can buy a 720p x360 for 100 bucks and it already has like 999999 games to choose from. And I can easily build a PC for 600 bucks that supports external harddrives. offers DNLA plays Games like Battlefield4 in 4K.

PS4 clearly worse value compared to x360 and PC.

Are we done ego boasting now? thanks

False. $600 PC can play Battlefield 4 in 8K.

No we will never be done, thanks.
