Forums - Sony Discussion - Potentially good news on the PS4 MP3 playback and DLNA support front

Sony received a decent amount of backlash for the lack of MP3 playback support noted in their official PS4 FAQ (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/10/30/ps4-the-ultimate-faq-north-america/), also noting that background music during games would only be available via the Music Unlimited service.

Shuhei to the rescue!!!

Just don't raise your hopes up. There's a reason why neither was implemented in the PS4, and that reason is trying to milk more money with Sony's own media services.

I'm happy I didn't use either much.

Yeah, it's pretty obvious this was a money grab for Music Unlimited.  I didn't use MP3 playback much because most games didn't support it.  Background music playback wasn't enabled at the OS level, it had to be enabled at the game level.  Gran Turismo 5 comes to mind as one that implemented it.

Uhuh. I guess that's why I didn't use it in many titles, though after a while, all my Wipeout HD music was custom

Wonder if ANYTHING comes of it. If not DLNA, then at least .mp3 support should be there, you don't wanna piss people off.

Yeah, I could live without DLNA, but not having MP3 playback is a little silly.

This is just PR pampering.

They will see how their Unlimited music goes and other profit centers. IF they fail hard and no one uses them and peopel still complain then they will think about implementing MP3 usage and stuff.

Anyone thinking sony is on your side is dillusional.

While it certainly is not out of bounds to assume this was simply a money grab by Sony this could also be attributed to the fact that the OS and its features are still immature and with the quickly approaching release date that these features have taken a back seat to the game focused issues.

.mp3/DLNA support can be patched in and as long as Shu and the PS Blog team etc. are being receptive to feedback we should politely keep nudging them on the features we want to see. I for one am confident at the least .mp3 support will come.

DLNA came with an update on PS3, didn't it?. I think it was update 1.80. This is nothing new.

I don't care about the lack of DLNA support, but I was really looking forward to finally having the only feature I was envious of that the 360 had.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

I gotta say, I'm a lot more disappointed that it wont have Ps1 and Ps2 retail and digital backwards compatibility. Should not be an issue at all with the hardware. Hoping it'll come later.
