So you have 4 Steam accounts, have bought something on all of them and you have logged in on them all in the past 30 days?

I love when people say "I have 500 Steam accounts".

There is no reason to have multiple accounts because your games are tied to a single account. The only reason people might have one is TF2 idling.

Well, if you are a huge ass troll/hacker you could of gotten a couple accounts banned from online play.

Though oddly somehow i've run acrosjs more hackers on console then PC.

And Origin has 50M.

That's registered users, not active.

And do we know what Valve means by active users? Am I an active user just because Steam loads on boot up on my laptop?

Seriously? This has been covered multiple times in this thread already:

1. Have purchased a game

2. Have logged in to Steam within the last 30 days

If you don't meet both those criteria then you're not an active user. The 50M figure you quoted isn't directly comparable as it's just registered users. I know people who have accounts on Origin to play Simpsons Tapped Out for instance. They haven't logged in for over a month but they'd still be counted.

Congrats to Valve and the greatest gaming service in the world. Keep on rolling!

i'm hardly interested in any online store because i want physical copies of my games. i'm not buying much but when i buy a game i want it day one and a physical copy of it. so as long there is no option like "buy digital now and get delivered a physical copy later on", i'm not interested in steam, psn or xbox live aside from Demos, additional DLC i care about and of course the online network for multiplayer.

I wonder if I'm counted in that. I haven't played a steam game in almost 5 months, but I'm always logged in and I recently made purchases.

How do they define an 'active user'?

Valve's definition of an active user:

1) User must have purchased something ever

2) Have logged in within the last 30 days

You can stop Steam from running when the computer stars, the option is in Settings>Interface.

Do we have a source for that?

"We define "active" as an account that owns at least one game and have logged in over the last 30 days."

So, I am considered to be an active account even though I haven't used Steam for months now.

If you haven't logged in for months, then no you're not considered an active user.

The same can't be said about Xbox Live and the Playstation Network, they count everyone even if you haven't logged in for years, which makes Steams numbers even more impressive.

Steam logs me on start up so, yes, I am an "active" user. I just never use it.

Well. I've signed up for both Xbox Live and Playstation Network, I haven't logged into the Playstation network in years.
Yet, in Sony's numbers I'm consdered an "active user".
