Nice, great news. Now I wonder what sales figures are?

So a free service has more then a paid service you don't say

I'm pretty sure those numbers include XBL Gold and Silver members.

How do they define an 'active user'?

Probably the ones with Steam installed on its PC/Smartphone and that uses the device.

Congrats to Valve with the milestone.

So I would be counted as a active user, even though I've only used Steam to download and play one game three years ago?

I think so.

I mean, the concurrent number of users very rarely goes beyond 6 million, so they must count all the people with Steam.

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

From what I recall, their definition of an active user is someone who has purchased something (at any time) and logged on in the last 30 days.

my bad

I have Steam on my computer, downloaded Alan Wake cuz it was $5 bucks. Does that make me an active user? Anyway, I think Steam is great for those with computers but I don't know why it's being compared to Xbox Live which is focused on Xbox 360.

I doubt it... there is probably a timescale on it. My guess would be users who played a game in the last month or week.

The "concurrent steam users" graph currently waves between 3 and 6 million users at once over the course of a day (though that figure may be purely steam client users online, which means those who have it log them in on startup but not necessarily playing a game)

I think I am one of these active users (logged in almost 24/7), but I would not call myself a PC gamer anyway. I use Steam for a handful of games, but mostly to communicate with some of my friends. Never paid more than 10€ for a game on there, and I usually only game on my PC twice in a month or something like that.

But still, congratulations, though I really don't think that that number represents PC gamers.

When HL3 comes out, we will be at 100m+
Steam Machines will help expand substantially.

Who knows what the future holds... Kinda exciting! PC gaming has been on the comeback for a while now!
