Now try the same thing on a 720p non-CRT TV. With proper anti-aliasing, 720p res will look much better. Higher resolution is better, but it certainly depends on what kind of equipments you have at your home, also, you need to take into account viewing distance and TV size to see if higher resolution is an improvement or not.
As others have said it would be the size of TV you are playing on. If you are sat in your bedroom playing on a small HD screen, not sure it will be that big a problem, but as these devices are starting to be sold as "Living room experiences" and Big screen TVs are becoming very cheap… thats when resolutions start to matter.

I think it's visually quite pleasing. I'm currently playing Beyond 2 souls and it's much nicer to have a consistent aspect ratio then changing it back and forth between cutscenes. 2.35:1 is more natural to look at and offers better options for framing, much nicer then having a lot of excess sky and floor dominating the picture.
It fully depends on the game though. Racing games need the full height to give you as much resolution as possible looking down the road, there vertical resolution is more important then horizontal.
OP looks fake, majority of games this gen have been 720p and they have looked fine, as does the Xbox launch line up.

I think the big issue is that a static image doesnt necessarily translate to a moving image... well thats what I guess... i have no idea really...lol

Eh, I'd just disregard everything in the OP tbh.

its not fake, i seen this picture before in an article that had many more. you should accept the fact that there is a big difference between 720p and 1080p.

Content wont look as good (or as clean) if not displayed in its native resolution. So yes, a HD Ready TV displaying 720p content will look a lot better than a full HD display showing the same thing on it. But that's besides the point, 1080p is definetly a big plus on larger screens. Anything over 32 inches and you'll see big improvements in clarity over 720p. And being higher in resolution makes aliasing less pronounced because there is much more detail on display.
Add to the fact that 1080P TV's have been around for so long now.. it's about time console makers stepped their game up and make machines actually capable of handling such resolutions. Just sick and tired of blurry ass, upscaled games on consoles. So I really don't want to have to deal with that for another generation tbph.

I've yet to see it with my own eyes, until then no, especially as I've seen no unbias sources for it.
All I know is there are so damn beautiful 720 games out there!
