Forums - Gaming Discussion - Picture - 720p vs 900p vs 1080p

Surely the AC4 comparison shows 1080p aint much better than 720p on the ps3. Not sure why anybody is bothered about resolution when framerate and jaggies should be the main focus as games are more susceptible to them.

It depends on screen size and viewing distance. For example 1280x800 16:10 is fine on my laptop, 1440x900 is fine on my old 19" 16:10 (why did they almost drop 16:10, it was better than 16:9 for everything but watching movies! ) PC monitor, but on my new 22" one 1080p starts being better and almost necessary. On TVs this translates to larger diagonals, given the longer viewing distance, but I guess that starting from 37-40" 1080p benefits start becoming noticeable (while 4k will become mainstream when 50" or more will become so too).

I once got into a debate with a guy that said he could tell the difference between the non-compressed audio in Metal Gear Solid 4 and other games. He swore it sounded so much crisper and clearer due to the non-compression techniques used in that game. In the end, I decided that what goes on in his head was his business. He believed he was getting a far superior experience so "good for him".

Yeah I think that is the best way to deal with things like this lol. let them have the Flac files if they feel they need it.

^Yes that's me ripping it up in the GIF. :)

Looking at these pics it is a noticable difference. My question is why does Ryse look as sharp as the 1080 pic even though it's 900? On a slightly different note, highest pixel doesn't make it nextgen or not. AI, enemies on screen, particle effects and lighting have every bit to do with a game being nextgen as does resolution.

Ain't that the damn truth!

However, one of the reasons that the shift from 16:10 to 16:9 occured was one of cost, they could cut more panels out with less waste.

This post does two things for me. It contradicts yourself on the 1st page when you said the images were not zoomed in. because on the article it is clearly zoomed in parts of and overall screen shot.

Second it confirms that te res is a non issue for me. The res difference what I take from this adds more textures to minor details of a frame. Details that you need to zoom into in order to notice. So on a big TV were images are essentially "zoomed in" it would be more noticable than smaller TV's. personally I play on a 24 inch so I would not see a difference.

And most would not be able to appreciate the changes. in numbers of colors and  minor calculations. the differences are HUGE on paper. as for sitting in front of a TV playing a fast pace video game. those differences are reduced to small things that you can't see but remains in the back of your head for those that care about it that much.

these are crops, if they are zoomed in then i am mistaken. however, there s a difference.

I'm thinking they must be zoomed in because Battlefield 4 beta on the 360 looks far better than the 720p picture and slightly better than the 900p.

Heck Black OPs 2 360 version looks as crisp as the 1080p picture and I know it's not even 720p.

I haven't actually played any games in the past few years that looked as bad as most of the 720p pictures look like in this thread.

Yes, because it's really important to look at the detailed grass... Come on, blurry 720p? I think this is getting to the point where it sounds ridiculous, really. You are moving to PS4 because it's less blurry... Well congrats, maybe you should start playing videogames tha ENTERTAIN you and get out of your home from time to time to watch some real grass, so that you don't worry aboout the grass in you 60 inch TV...

Agree with what make next gen part.

A wise game reviwer said early into the life of the 360 and ps3 that the days of being wowed by game graphics are a thing of the past. As we cross over from this gen to the next, the graphics are improved but not to the extent that it is valid to buy a new console for. Some of these next gen games are not as good looking as some of the current gen's games. all other generation leaps before this one, there was no debate on the graphical changes, they were all major improvments. this is the first time a current gen game can look better than a next gen game.

So my view point is, this big deal about graphics is stupid!

I partly disagree. When this gen started I heard the same thing. Which may have been true to an extent.  Compare an early 360/ps3 game to the more modern titles, there is almost generational leap in itself.  We don't yet see what nextgen is capable of. Right off the bat IMO KZ:SF, Forza 5 and Dead Rising 3 look leaps and bounds better then there predecessors. btw My biggest complaint of this generation is how retarded ai usually are.
