Forums - Gaming Discussion - Was the Wii U's launch lineup more anticipated than the PS4's and One's is?

Before saying anything else, let it be known that I believe the PS4 and probably the Xbox One will ultimately outsell the Wii U by a fair margin. They have a load of factors working in their favor, including seemingly great exclusive and multiplatform games.

BUT

As you may know, I run a monthly poll on this website for peoples' most anticipated games. People vote on five games, from most wanted to least wanted, and point values are assigned to each vote. Then, all the numbers are added up and we get some interesting results.

Well, I happened to stumble across last year's results, for the month before the Wii U launched, on my laptop earlier today, and saw that they were... very different from this year's batch of new consoles.

The following is a list of the currently most anticipated games coming out this year for the Xbox One.

Title Platform Publisher Points
Forza 5 One Microsoft 6
Spark One Microsoft 3

Not very impressive, I know, but Microsoft fans are rare on this site, and people seem to be waiting for Halo and Destiny.

Next, we have PS4 games coming out in 2013.

Title Platform Publisher Points
Killzone Shadowfall PS4 Sony 33
Call of Duty: Ghosts PS4 Activision 9
Battlefield 4 PS4 Electronic Arts 4
Assassin's Creed 4 PS4 Ubisoft 2
Need for Speed Rivals PS4 Electronic Arts 1

That's not amazing, but still pretty nice! Look at how the star of the launch is clearly Killzone, with the rest of the games being multiplatform titles.

But what about the Wii U's results this time last year?

Title Platform Publisher Points
New Super Mario Bros U Wii U Nintendo 60
ZombiU Wii U Ubisoft 36
Assassin's Creed 3 Wii U Ubisoft 23
Epic Mickey 2 Wii U Disney 14
Nintendo Land Wii U Nintendo 5
Little Inferno Wii U Tomorrow  4
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Wii U Activision Blizzard 2
Ninja Gaiden 3 Wii U Nintendo 2
Scribblenauts Unlimited Wii U Warner Bros 2
Batman: Arkham City - Armored Edition Wii U Warner Bros 1

That's right. The Wii U had more launch games charting than the One and PS4 COMBINED do at the moment. And the Wii U had about THREE TIMES as many points as the PS4 does at the moment. And strangely enough, only one of the top four Wii U games come from Nintendo. Hell, AC3 and EM2 were multiplatform games!

What does this mean? Well, not that the PS4 and One are doomed. They have a lot of big games coming up, like Final Fantasy, Infamous, Destiny, and Watch Dogs.

But that's the thing. These games are coming LATER. The actual launches of the PS4 and Xbox One, at least according to this website's members, simply don't seem to measure up to the Wii U's 2012 launch.

What do you think? Do these poll results reveal something about these different platforms? Could the PS4 and One potentially have problems in the future? Were Nintendo fanboys being delusional getting hyped for ZombiU?

Please comment and say what you think!

A) That "Most Wanted" data is anegdotal at best.
B) The site has a lot of hardcore Nintendo fans. If we would extrapolate how anticipated W101 was for example here, it would already be at 500k WW, same with 3rd party games, a lot of people here say they will buy or already bought a lot of 3rd party games for Wii U, VGC numbers don't reflect this if we would again extrapolate. That shows how the "Most Wanted" numbers are skewed.
C) Even if the Wii U launch line up was more anticipated than the PS4/X1, the console itself definitely wasn't.

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

I don't need points to tell me.

Nintendoland and ZombiU were both far more "oooooh that looks interesting" than anything on either the PS4 or XBONE lineup, and thats coming from someone with a PS4 pre ordered.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

A) Naturally. But at very least there is a grain of truth in them, at least in respect to the hardcore gaming community.

B) The month before TW101 was released, it got 2 votes. I understand what you're saying about Nintendo fans, but you picked one of the worst examples possible.

C) The PS4 is more anticipated than the Wii U was. The One... I'm not so sure.

"Was the Wii U's launch lineup more anticipated than the PS4's and One's is?" On this forum. Most probably.

"What does this mean?" It doesn't mean much.. all consoles sell out at launch regardless. And, like you said, the other games are coming. Releasing steadily throughout all of next year.

"What do you think? Do these poll results reveal something about these different platforms?" Nah, numbers here are heavily skewered (poll wise). I'm thinking that around 40% of the VGChartz community are the more dedicated Nintendo gamers. It doesn't say a lot.

"Could the PS4 and One potentially have problems in the future?" Unlikely, but possible. People are talking about them. Gamers and non gamers alike.

"Were Nintendo fanboys being delusional getting hyped for ZombiU?" Yep. Lol.

In the end, a consoles launch lineup is not important in the long run. It's what comes after thats key. Worst thing that console makers can do is leave people high and dry with not much games to play on the system after their initial launch.

This site just has a lot of Nintendo fans.

And wow at Epic Mickey 2 numbers!

Well, yeah, obviously. It has never been a question of that. At the moment, we should be asking whether they will have better games after that. In the weeks 2=48 timeframe they obviously have a good chance.

The original game had some hardcore fans, and from what I can tell, with good reason.

How were we supposed to know the sequel would fix none of the original's problems and add new ones at that?

Funny how bad the PS4 launch lineup actually is but still doesn´t get criticisized by the so called "hardcoregamers".

One more thing to note: Look at how well Assassin's Creed 3 did in 2012 on the Wii U. Compare it to the measly 2 points on the other two consoles combined. Do you think this is a bad sign for the series?
