“it had a red light (where the typical blue LED light) and had a message on the screen saying that the console had a very high temperature.  The security case was opened and in two seconds the error message was removed and the light had returned to its normal color.

So the Red Line of Warning?

Yup.

The security case does have ventalation.  You can see the holes on the bottom clearly and I'm guessing they exist on the top as well.

Albeit I'm sure it isn't sufficient.

Cable in/out... only this one in the bottom.

Better picture.

This one is ridiculous but I think this case it is only a PS4 shell.

1. Those holes are not sufficient for proper ventilation.

2. Apparantly its "Red line of warning". The system works. It just went to safe mode.

This is actually a good thing, if its true that it warns you.

It is, so long as it isnt something that happens a lot.  But this is extremely unlikely as I doubt people will place their consoles in a small perspex box with zero air circulation (almost a thermos flask).

Nice to see sensible responses in a thread of this nature.  Shoe on the other foot?  doubt it would be so civil.

Probably not. But the reason would be obvious, no? It's not like the problem plagued any PS console...

Let's hope, for that other shoe, that history won't repeat itself.

Guys... It is like PS3, 360, iPhone, etc warnings.

Pics from GAF.

PS4 uses less power than PS3 according to cerny so in a well ventilated environment you'd expect it to have less overheating issues. Additionally they havent (apparently) overclocked anything so i guess this was an isolated incident

Wonderful irony, I have just been informed that the console strip light is only capable of displaying in varying intensities of blue, from unlit to bright white.
There is physically no way for it to display red.

Take that news however you want.

Quoting self for awareness.

I don't care what console it is, you don't put those things in a case with so little ventilation. That's stupid. That being said, it's good to know that the system prevents itself from melting down. If I'm not mistaken it was reported that the Xbox One does the same thing, right?

Well Xbone needs to do that... if not then it is a new RROD.

Its not Red Line of Death, its a Red Line of Warning message just like a notification. They had no ventilation and this is what happens if a device has no ventilation where the heat will go and cool air comes in. It seems like PS4 is more intelligent in protecting itself because the Red line gone in just 2 seconds to normal  for ventilation after opening the case on which PS4 was selead.

Yeah, but you got to agree: The Red Line of Death sounds WAY cooler :).
