Forums - General Discussion - 46% of Americans believe in Creationism

That's pretty scary, and not because there are people who don't believe in evolution or natural evolution because they think there's a lack of evidence, but because people believe in creationism or "God guided" evolution despite the lack of evidence. If you're going to lack a belief in one thing because you think it lacks evidence, that's fine, but at least be consistent.

82-present makes sense as the rise of the religious right to prominence in American politics, so of course there's going to be a little slippage, as the "us or them" mentality includes (in the grand political scheme of things) silly things like evolution rather than issues actually relevant to our present day.

Much like how Democrats are probably becoming more anti-gun over time, because the NRA has politicized gun ownership to the other side

Not really.  It's just the anti-gun people are getting more vocal.

You tend to see a jump in support for gun cotnrol right after a mass shooting, then within a couple weeks it's back down to it's normal levels.

Gun control is really a better example of "Play on fear and emotions instead of facts."

A good one for Democrats actually would be the widespread crusade against GMO's.   Despite tons of sceintific tests being run on them, showing that they are actually healthier to eat than your average produce because they require far less pesticides since they are bred resistant to bugs.

The whole movement is amazingly antiscientific.  The scary part is how strong it is in the EU too... despite the fact that all the sceince bodies in the EU are against the ban... but hey, France has to protect their agriculture buisness.  Don't want to have grain that can eaisly be grown in Finland and Romania.

I agree, although it doesn't help that the pro GMO side is pretty much owned wholesale by Monsanto to let them continue their monopolistic practices. First the law on GMO seeds needs to be changed, then we can make the issue politically neutral.

What are your thoughts on the accepted fact that science does not PROVE anything? Even my world renowned college biology and chemistry professors would start out their semesters with that tid-bit of information.

I wouldn't entirely agree with that statement as a whole, but i understand the idea behind it and would agree with it in regards to evolution.

Evolution just happens to be supported by enough evidence that the argument for the alternative seems laughable. The alternate also doesn't explain the existence of dinosaur bones (other than some peoples belief that god put them there to trick us, which seems downright bizarre to me, but each to their own i suppose). In the same way i can't PROVE with 100% certainty that a hamster would lose in a cage fight against a lion, but i'm still going to put my money on the lion :P

I'm perfectly open to the idea that evolution was in some way guided by a god or being within the paramiters of one, but the idea that we were directly created by such a thing seems awfully egotistical of the human race. In the same way we used to believe we were at the center of the universe :P

29% believe the sun goes around the earth? ._.

I have full faith that once we die, we will all be greeted by those we've lost, and live eternal.

When you consider that 25% of US Christians believe Jesus will return within their lifetime, this 29% is not that surprising, although it is very alarming.

The more educated you are the less likely you are to be religious. Simple as that.

Flat earth society is gaining traction too

Evolution (that is that you evolved from goo by the way of the zoo) is one of the biggest lies in the past 100 years or so.

Evolution is not even science by definition since no has observed one population of a creature evolve to another. They tried doing it with fruitflies but to no avail. Nor can evolution be repeated.

I suggest for people to take time to study the arguments and evidence against evolution.
