Well there you have it folks. The wii u gamepad is pretty worthless for trying to change gameplay in a significant way. Not even the nintendo owned games take advantage of it in a meaningful way.

The gamepad is the most amazing thing that has been introduced to the console market in a long time. I don't care if it's inovative, but the off screen play is more than enough for me.

That's for the mass market to determine and not some forum dwellers around here.

Apply that to your own posts and be wary of sweeping negative generalizations

True but at the same time most forum dwellers don't understand the mass market so that generalization is fair for the most part.

Haven't bought W101 yet. But in Zelda its a huge benefit to me.

1) Capability to play off-tv is a MASSIVE benefit in my home for every game. Sure if you're single, no kids etc, then meh, but with a family this is an essential feature.

2) Playing on TV with gamepad makes the game super easy to manage your items/map etc. Its far more convenient that having to pause game.

EDIT: related to mass market talk above. off-tv IS the perfect mass market benefit. mass market for games are families, especially Nintendo games.

For Wind Waker, it's absolutely marvellous. The gamepad greatly improves the flow of the game since you're not constantly bringing up the menu to either switch items or look at the map.

Flames are conjuring under your post, so I'll discuss this with you.  I've been finding it more of a hassle to use the gamepad.  I mean, I have to stop just as much as bringing up a menu.  On top of that, I have to look up and down quite often as opposed to keeping my head straight and waiting the split second for the menu to come (Which is faster than looking down btw).  Plus you still have to stop while you're looking at your map/inventory.  Thoughts?

Can't speak for TruckOSaurus and his experiences or preferences naturally, but to me personally pausing the game to look at the menu has just become cumbersome.

It just takes longer to; press start to pause, get over to the item select screen, scrolling item for item towards the item you want with your cursor, tapping the button you want the item to be set on, press start again to un-pause; than to; look down to the GamePad where everything's already in front of you, swiping your item to the desired slot, looking back up towards the screen. It's now seamless, more fluent, more natural. If that makes sense as an answer, I know it's hard to explain a feeling. The same applies to the map really, which is also easier to look at because it's now right in front of your face. Though I admit that last part could be because I need glasses to see things far away decently. Even with those, my glasses-less natural eye-sight for things close-by is still better.

I've found that I actually have to get used to using the menus again when I play the game in off-tv mode, because it's not as intuitive. It's funny how fast you're (well, 'I'm', anyway) accustomed to something that you think feels more natural and un-learn something you've been doing for 20 years.

I can understand why someone would want to stay with the 'traditional' way though. I recognize you can often control stuff... 'mindlessly' in the tradional way, it could probably be more relaxing. Besides, my opinion is somewhat biased anyway because I usually prefer the un-orthodox control schemes. I don't have a mouse for my PC for example, I have a track-ball. I also found, to use another Zelda game, that the stylus-control in Phantom Hourglass was the way to control a game on the DS and should have been the way to control any 3D game on a handheld after that for that matter. I'm actually slightly bummed newer games (including the upcoming A Link Between Worlds) never used such a control scheme anymore .

Sorry Peelman you wrote a bit too much :P.  But I glancing over what you wrote, even using the pad to select items is combersome, you have to drag an item to a button slot and then press the button to use it, it's not better than highlighting it and then selecting it.  Highlighting and selecting is just as fast and doesn't have the added motion of moving your head.  Like, as a comparison, I prefer using the Wii-mote for the exact same functions than using the pad.  It's more or less where your focus is.  Using the pad is a primary focus instead of secondary.  Primary being where your vision is, secondary being your actions.  Like can you imagine playing Street Fighter and constantly have to look down at your controller when you wanna through a fireball?  Or playing smash and staring down at your controller to press a to attack?  That to me, is where the pad fails, you can't make using it a secondary focus.  Unless we can figure out a way to play Zelda without using items or looking at a map O_O

I prefer gamepad for Wind Waker for two reason.

1. I do think it has features that improve game. Seeing map on bottoms screen, or items ect at all times is super handy. Doing dungeons is amazing having the map on the controller screen at all times. Then swapping items is easier and you don't need to pause doing it. Only time I pause game is when a break a jar and a fairy pops out. Then its pause and quickly equip bottle so that i can catch and not run into it. have to be careful and get fairy's in hero mode. Looking at the treasure maps and the map at same time while still sailing is beyond amazing.

2. the gamepads battery life. It only last what 4 hours or so. keeps me from video gaming for too long, lol.

No, it's not. But the gameplay feels way better, when you can easily switch weapons or look at a map while sailing in Wind Waker. I also love it to play the game on the gamepad while watching tv. At the Moment it don't revolutionize how you play games, but controlling with it is really awesome ;)

I loved TROPICO so much on the Xbox360, I really hope they do more of these RTSs on the PS3 ot PS4.

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

ah yea forgot about that.  Aiming is really easy with that.

Well actually had a hard time against the forest boss aiming at his tentacle things. I resorted back to using right stick to quickly select thing with boomerang there.  But aiming with Bow and hookshot and stuff is a million times easier and smoother with gyro

That is true, for people who have families and everything...
