Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Including Kinect With Every Xbox One Is A Smart Move By Microsoft

How do get to the 50% number if every system sold has it?  Most people buying the XB1 will hook it up(probably 95%+).  THey will try some of the unique features it provides.  They will start gaming and stop thinking about it.  Even if they don't regularly use it, it will be hooked up.  When they talk to their friends that have an XB1(people in friend groups generally buy similar or the same consoles), they will hear how they did something  or used kinect and the curiousity will kick in.

I have had a number of people who own 360's come over to my place and want to try the kinect.  A good portion of them went out and purchased it afterwords.  Seeing as how the Kinect 1.0 way underperformed compared to the demos for 2.0, I would think that it will only get easier for people to get into using Kinect 2.0  .

People who say that they just can't buy the XB1 because they are paying for the Kinect or just don't want that feature is understandable.  It is odd if they haven't even tried it out.  I would bet that a number of them will eventually try it at a friends or whatever and quickly see that it isn't as much gimmick as they thought.  Kinect is really just another tool to have hooked to your television.  It can enhance many features of your living room.  The best part is that it can enhance and change how you play games.  Hard for me to jusge a game without playing it, so I can't imagine how so many people can dismiss this tech woithout atleast trying it.  The hard part for M$ is that very few of the launch titles really show the full capability of the Kinect, so people aren't being wowed.  I am not looking for being wowed, I just like the enhancements in all aspects that is can provide.

I get 50% because im being genourous and saying that Xbox have half the market share, with PS4 and PC. You need to remember most games are multiplatform and Xbox is only a percentage of the total people playing a developers game.

If i was being realistic i would probably go lower with 25-30% of a multiplaform devs players having a kinect.

Its just not gonna be supported well. Neither is PS4s touch pad. Why add features improve features for the minority when you can spend time making the game better for everybody.

Hadn't thought about that in context of your 50%.  So that makes sense.  The one thing that you are assuming(probably right based on what we know today) is that A.  PS4 will sell 2 to 1 compared to the XB1 (only way to get to 30%, I don't count PC sales with consoles) B.  Sony will not sell many or any Move/camera systems C. Multiplats are the only games people care about.

If the Kinect and its features take off in the marketplace (IE. the Wii) adding to the XB1 install base even just marginally, Sony already has the tech in place to match or beat M$'s price point($450) and jump on the bandwagon.  The support in games is not that hard to really do as people think.  The programming tools are available today for the Kinect 1.0 and if they aren't yet, they soon will be for Kinect 2.0.  Afterall, it is in the end just another controller.  Game support doesn't have to mean some huge thing.  Even minor things like voice control for things that normally take you out of the game or require more of your attention to activate would be easy and simple to put in.

Part of the problem is that Developers have the same problem here that they have with the power difference between the XB1 and the PS4.  They will write multiplat games to match the lowest common denominator.  Meaning that they won't want the XB1 version to be too much better(Kinect enhancements) than the PS4 version.  It's really too bad that Sony bailed on supporting their Camera/Move controllers and didn't include them in the box.

its a good move, for micorsoft, not for me, I dont want the dam camera, if i want a xbone im being forced to buy the perhiperal.......I would never! use it so as the consumer its not giving me personally any benifit, for those who want it, yes its great

Its cool if you dont want to by into Xbox One ( everyone forgets its called One because its trying to be more than a games machine ).

But Kinect 2.0 is Xbox One.

do i need that camera to play gta/call of duty? in what way does that benifit me playing those games, its doesnt, it isnt needed, its a perhiperal, if i was into games that involved a camera, or i wanted to skypre, then sure id need it and then go buy the perhiperal (optionally).....but I dont want/need it, so why do i have to purchase the console at a higer price because they want me to have it, its not a nessecity

I will say this, perhaps Microsoft should have waited for the Xbox One to release Kinect all together. Never should have sold it for the 360.

People remember that Kinect was more of a gimmick than anything this gen. It didn't do many of the things they said it would (remember scan in your skateboard) and many of the things it could do (remember gun customization in Ghost Recon) was cool the first time you used it and a waste of time after that.

It's legacy is that it was a gimmick at best

Kinect in theory may be pretty cool. In practice, it hasn't lived up to even low expectations

Kinect 2 may be the greatest thing since sliced bread. But it is held back by it's older brother if you will. Whether or not it lives up to everything Microsoft says it will is one thing. Whether or not people are willing to try it again or for the first time even after everything they heard before is another. Cheaper options out there in the PS4 and Wii U.

I see power differnces being less of an issue, they  dont make games for the lowest common denominator. As weve seen this gen they make games for ultra PCs and scale down the assets from there to the lower spec machines, devs will carry on doing this.

I get some devs might put the odd voice command in here or there this could be done on all platforms quite easily, but there can never be a major feature a game changer because they cant support it for the majority of there market and yes you do have to include PC, they have a decent share of multiplatform game sales these days.

Fifa supports Kinect and Move but only because its a small gimmick feature, no one uses it, no one goes im gonna get that on Platform X or Y because of those fantastic motion support options.

Of course first party will support it im sure its pretty much required that they do.

Aside the things it can potentially do for games and such.

I'd love recording my stuff but never found and bothered with a proper setup.
Now it will be a piece of cake!

You make one of the most valuable points in this thread.  It's not that you can't do some of what Kinect 2.0 offers some other way.  It's that you can now do it very simply.  You already have a tv set and the game system hooked up to it.  Now you can do these other things and it doesn't require any special work to do them.

It's about simplifying a lot of things:

    - If you want to change the channel you just say it.  No need to find the remote.

    - If you want to call someone(skype), you just say it.  No need to go grab a tablet or turn on your PC/Laptop.

    - If you want to call in computer generated support or grab a weapon or tool from your belt/pack in a game, you just say " I need back up" or  "equip X".

    - If you want to play a bluray, you just say it.

That's not even including any of the obvious motion things that can be done.

It´s a risk move.

If it´s smart or not only time will tell.

What logic is that?

Do you need Wii Nunchuck to play or Wii U tablet to play Mass Effect 3, Batman, etc etc. If I wanted to play touch or wave gaming Id have bought it for my Wii/ Wii U seperately.

See the logic here?

A peripheral is an after thought idea which is an add on.

Xbox One is as it is. Kinect 2.0 is not an add on and not a peripheral.

Xbox One is not Xbox 360 or PS3.
