Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Xbox 360 about to pass Wii for King of 7th Gen in North America!

It was earlier this year while ago that the Xbox 360 passed the Wii in the UK to be the #1 console of the 7th generation.  It's been closing in on the Nintendo Wii, and now they are at 44.9 million to 44.7 million according to VGChartz numbers.  The Xbox 360 has been the best selling console in the USA for the last 33 months.  Less than one percent away from passing the Wii!

Also, in recent news Nintendo is shutting down production of it's great selling Wii system and foccusing on WiiU. So when Xbox 360 passes, it will be permanate.

This is a great achievement for Microsoft on only's it's second console.  With the Xbox One coming out in November, surely it will take away some of the Xbox 360's sales.  Altough, it is expected that the Xbox 360 will get a price reduction - which should counter the effect.

So at current sales, it looks like it will be a few months.  But with big games coming out, do you think it will be sooner or later?  Any date predictions?

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Sorry to disappoint you Zappy but VGC figures are wrong! The gap is just under 1.8m (360 vastly overtracked here in the states)

Fear not though! It will pass either this December or Q1 next year :)

It may only be on the verge of passing up the Wii in total sales in the NA market now, but I assure you that the 360 passed the Wii in terms of households that actively use the console (at least a couple times a week) a long time ago.

Can't tell you how many friends and relatives' homes I've been in over the last 2 years with Wiis just sitting in the corner or under their entertainment cabinets collecting dust, with a short stack of all the usual suspects in terms of software library nearby, none of which were released later than 2010.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Passed Wii SW in the US last year I believe, should overtake WW in the end.

Pretty funny how hardware placings could look like this

PS3 > Wii > 360

But SW could look the opposite or 360 > PS3 > Wii

Its already the king of software when it comes to the 7th generation in North America for quite a while now.

Kind of odd that the console that wins in the country that sells the most consoles but loses in total. A nice achievement and with lots of SW sales. I wonder what kind of numbers Xbox One will pull.

Oh and not to ruin the party. But "This is a great achievement for Microsoft on only's it's second console" most big companys debut and 2nd console do pretty good :D.

It's been an odd generation indeed. The console that sells the most (albeit in the USA after Wii U released) in the biggest and 3rd biggest console markets ends up selling the least globally. And the console that has sold least in those 2 markets, and 2nd in the 2nd biggest console market (Japan) could end up selling the most. Though honestly I think the bottom is going to drop out of PS3 and X360 when PS4bone launch. Maybe one last hurrah this holidays, but they'll be dead and buried, more or less, by holiday 2014. So I don't see PS3 catching Wii.

Best thing about this generation though is that every home console sold well, and sold plenty of software.

Yet the Wii has 5 games in the top 10 for NA lifetime sales while the 360 has 1.  Sales might not equal quality but Nintendo has sold more 1st party software in NA compared to MS.  Fact: more people prefer Mario Kart in NA than Halo.

More casuals especially !

Dont' expect Mario Kart U sells a lot et and makes Wii U's sales grow by 500k.

Mario Kart Wii sells because Wii and casual gamers, nothing else.

Nope, it sold because of the awesome commercials, and I expect Wii U sales to grow by at least 500k from MK.  You are talking weekly sales right?  Well you didn't specify so I am assuming lifetime sales.  MK is a system seller just like Halo is.
