Forums - Gaming Discussion - Valve Details Steambox Prototype Specs Compared To PS4 XB1

That lowest config (GTX660/i3) will trade blows with PS4, but if it's not priced accordingly...well, good luck with that.

This Steam Box experiment is looking more and more bleak. I honestly don't see who they could target with this.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

I don't understand the purpose of SteamBox. Why would anyone buy a Steambox over a PC? The machine is directed at people already familiar with PC gaming, what do they gain from buying a Steambox?

Like I mentioned above, since the steam machines are being made by 3rd parties, there could be a lot of types to choose from, some of them might be cheaper than the PS4 and Xbone. What Valve is trying to do is make PC gaming gaming more accessible, make PC gaming feel as close as possible to console gaming. And from what I understand, the Steam Machines are being made so you can hook them your TV and play like a console. That's the main goal of the Steam Machines and SteamOS.

For some reason I doubt those cheaper versions of Steambox  can run games comparably to PS4 and Xbone.   I'm predicting that even the entry models will retail for  no less than $600.

That's ... quite a range. Exactly like things are now, to be exact.

Really, we're just talking about a branded PC that comes with the Steam OS. A comparison chart is meaningless. I really don't understand the point of a "Steambox" unless they can sell them really, really cheap, at-cost, to convince people to try Steam OS. Otherwise, what's the point of buying one?

I can't really see this touching the consoles much. The people who will buy one are probably already PC gamers. The "Steambox" will still have the disadvantages of a PC compared to a console so it's not like there will be a sudden difference.

Steam machines have potential. if they can get a 400$ box out and make PC gaming streamline for the general masses that'll be great. The high end stuff will be great for those who want high end stuff too. Valve has a great service(with features you cant get elsewhere) and they have great content. If they can make it work as a smooth and seamless process, with minimal fiddling it'll be great)

In the end getting a steambox could just burn your wallet a lot less than buying a console.

$520 isn't a bad price, I'd consider buying that before building a PC.

However, I really wish Valve was focusing on cloud gaming. I have enough hardware!

Was really hoping for AMD hardware.

A 7770 entry model sporting a dual core i3 and 4GB DDR3 RAM with 1GB VRAM with steam OS, with their discounts could go for $300 on the market with them taking a very small loss. With the mantle API and all it would've gotten Xbone performance. Shame, really.

Too expensive. Who is this aimed at? PC gamers will just stick with PC, too expensive and not enough exclusives for console gamers. Im confused as to what valve is going after here.

?? See GTA online, Sim city...Cloud is years away, many years.

Valve wants to much for even the low cost version.
