Is greater sales potential alone justification enough to determine the artistic style of the next Zelda game?

I hated twilight princess, it's the first Zelda game I couldn't bother to finish. Hated everything about it. I'd rather go back to play 2 before I ever touch TP again. I think they only reason it sold as well as it did was because it was the first one available for the Wii.

The second Zelda game I never finished was wind waker. And I skipped the last one on Wii. Is it worth playing? I keep thinking about picking it up but i just can’t bring myself to do it, i don’t want to be further disappointed by one of my favorite franchise.

It all depends on what you like in Zelda games. If you hated Twilight Princess, Wind Waker is the polar opposite. I still love both.

Oh. Skyward Sword is fun if you like linear and more cinematic games. It has faults like much repetativeness, but it does have a great story, graphics and probably one of the funnest bosses ever (koloktos). I would say buy it if you want to experience the genesis tale for Legend of Zelda

How is it Linear? I could fly wherever I want and do whatever dragon I wanted to do first?

Just because its cartoony doesnt mean it has kiddy themes.

This. And about cartoony style and recent, powerful HW: use graphics power to remove any jaggies from cartoony look and make it look like it was hand drawn, use it to make it easier to draw it better, but don't ever use it in a way that makes it look plasticky.

HD anime time yo.

But nonoe of that floaty eyebrow crap

Yes.

In the end, which of the two (artistic integrity or financial success) is more important depends on whether you are creating a product foremost, or a piece of art.

And for better or worse, Nintendo have been pretty clear on where they stand on this: they make products, not art.

I believe in honesty, civility, generosity, practicality, and impartiality.

For one thing, WWHD is a remake. Sales of a remake and sales of a brand new, ground up for the Wii U HD Zelda will be a totally different thing.

For another, I don't think it's "sacrificing anything" to have a realistic style. "Realistic" Zelda is STILL a hell of a lot more creative and whimsical than, let's say, GTA, or Uncharted, or CoD, etc., as far as art style is concerned.

And personally, I thought that Wii U Zelda tech demo's art style and graphics looked a hell of a lot prettier than WWHD's.

TP sold 1.5 million on a dead console as a new one was being released (in which the more popular version was being sold). Not to mention the Gamecube had such a terrible installbase to begin with.

That's incredible on it's own.

TP wouldn't have sold if it wasn't appealing. You can say it rode the Wii wave like you can say any Wii game released from 2006-2008 rode the Wii wave. Keep in mind that Wii Sports was the all-time big seller which most people were satisfied with alone, and yet TP still sold nearing 7 million on Wii alone in it's life time. That's also incredible.

So graphics sadly do matter when it comes to Zelda. In the same way Wind Waker-like graphics wouldn't work for CoD, some people think it doesn't work for Zelda either.

Though PH sold well for it's innovation, ST showed it couldn't hold up, despite still selling very well.

I bought the GCN version of TP. For Left handed Link.

Doing with darker graphics isn't sacrificing the series' artistic integrity; Twilight Princess, Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask already used this style.

They'd be stupid to make the next Zelda a toon one, that would only appeal to established fans while a darker looking one would draw in people who would otherwise ignore Wii U.
