blues are a better team now

Goaltending wise, on paper, yeah. Steve Ott is a joke though, adds no serious threat to the team. Blues gave up Stewart who is a much better player than Ott.

Very poor analysis. Blues made a huge upgarde in net and added a balls out player with some scoring touch in Ott. He will be a perfect player for them in the play offs. Giving up Stewart for the Blues does not hurt, the real price the Blues paid are Carrier and the two picks. In other words selling off parts of the future to improve now. Has worked out ok so far. Playoffs will tell the real story.

Not really. Miller is better on paper, yes, but when was the last time he proved himself in the play-offs? Steve Ott hardly has a scoring year, he has maybe 10 goals this year and that's with playing roughly top line minutes.

Yes, very poor. Miller is the best goalie in the NHL right now, and now that he is behind a solid defense everyone will see it. Part of what makes Miller's game so strong is the insane mental focus he has and his ability to reset immidiatly after a bad goal or a bad game or whatever. Qualities that are very important in the playoffs. Paired with his long history of playing almost every game every season, he is a huge upgrade in net over Jaroslav Halak.

As for Steve Ott, he is not brought to the Blues to score goals. And let's not forget what team he played for before the trade. The Sabers are historically bad at generating scoring opportunities and shots on goal this year. Steve Ott will be valueable for the Blues in opening up the ice for their scorers. He will be a beast for them in the playoffs is my prediction.

The Blues are like the Wild, they run a defensive system that will make almost any goaltender look better than they are as  compared to if they have played for almost any other team. This makes him a great goalie that is made look better by his team , not the best goalie.

Bold statement for something very arguable. And a huge upgrade over Halak? Halak is having a really good season this year and proved he could be the number 1 goalie for the Blues.

Let's not forget how many times Ott played with Hodgson and/or Moulson this year.

Even Broadziak (Wild) had a 20+ goal year a few years ago...

Did you watch Ryan Miller play for the Sabres? How would you describe the defensive system that Ryan Millar has played behind for over 10 years? If you think I'm the kind of guy who declares someone the best goalie in the world based on a 5 game sample you are wrong. Ryan Miller is an exeptional goalie who has virtually no technical flaws in his game. The one critisism you might have is that he sometimes can be a little soft high glove on point shots. When it comes to reflexes, mental focus, and ability to stay with the shooter he is absolutely world class. His ability to play the angles and take away the net for a shooter is unmatched.

Jaroslav Halak is a very good goalie, Ryan Miller is a great goalie, perhaps even a future HoF goalie.

Of course it will always be arguable when you discuss the difference between 4 or 5 of the best players in the universe at their position. Ryan Miller has put up numbers that stack up against anyone in the league on a team that is so horrid defensively that it is almost beyond comprehension some times. Anyway, I've given my opinion on Ryan Miller above. The only area where you might have a case that Halak is on par or even better than Miller is he's rebound control. All other aspects that Halak's game is based on: patience, mental focus, and staying in control of the game are earas where Ryan Miller is undoubtably better. On top of that Ryan Miller has elite level reflexes and positioning. Halak is a very good goalie, but Miller is an excellent goalie. How anyone can argye that Miller is a huge upgarde over Halak is a mystery to me, especially considering that Halak was pretty much the only hole on the Blues roster.

Also, if you are going to analyze Steve Ott's game based on how many goals he scores and compare him to Broadziak than you are missing the point. That is not Steve Ott's role and the act that he played 2nd line minutes for Buffalo tells you everything you need to know about how telent depleted the Sabres are right now. Steve Ott is a solid to excellent 3rd line winger who plays the kind of game you will have to play in the playoffs. With St. Louis depth they can afford to drop Steve Ott to the 4th line where he'll have way above regular 4th line offensive upside.

(PS. Steve Ott played virtually no minutes with Matt Moulson)

I agree Miller is the better goalie of the two, just more or less saying Halak isn't bad in anyway. It would have been torture to Miller to keep him in Buffalo and I'm glad he was sent to a playoff qualifying (and probably will be for many years to come) team. He's still in his prime and is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon. I guess I'm more surprised that other teams that need the goaltending more didn't push harder for him. Halak is now stuck in Washington which has terrible defense especially compared to that of the Blues,  if he can hold his own there, I think he will prove himself.

I would definitely say Ott and Broadziak fill the same roll for their respected teams though. I have no respect or appreciation for Ott though. Dirty player who has had many suspensions and even tried gouging out Moens eyes.

Either way, the Blues are easily one of the toughest teams to beat now. Strong all around, can score and not just rely on strong defense and goaltending.

I disagree, Kyle Brodziak is a power forward with pretty decent hands for a big man. Steve Ott is a energy skater, or a pest if you will. The roles are not at all the same. A better comparisson for Steve Ott on the Wild would be Matt Cooke, and a better comparison on the Sabres for Broadziak would be Drew Stafford or Chris Stewart.

Finally, I never said Halak is a bad goalie, he is a good to very good goalie. The thing is that Miller is an absolute elite goalie, and that's what the massive upgarde is all about. When Miller settles in fully behind the Blues defense it will become evident.

Elliot - Never
Halak - few years ago for the Canadiens.

Not with the Blues.  Otherwise he would still be on the team.
