Forums - PC Discussion - Is it worth going for a Radeon 7790 at this point (for £85)?

ok so i see alot of people saying dont get the 7790. i can see waiting for the new r7 cards however if you run 2x 7790 cards in crossfire which would cost about the same as a single 7870 you get performance close to a 7970 atleast according to some benchmarks by techpowerup http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7790_CrossFire/6.html
2x 7790
84.90x2 =169.80
1x 7870
169.99 +2.99 shipping
of course its up to you. personally im waiting for the r7

Well this motherboard just has the one PCI-E slot, so I'm afraid Crossfiring/SLIing will have to wait for a major upgrade (for which I'd probably have to get a new case, CPU, and pretty much everything else except drives and power supply).

At £169.89 you might as well just get 7950 for £173 and overclock it. A single 7950 will out perform 2x7790 especially overclocked.

http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/radeon_hd_7950_overclock_guide,1.html

Intel core i7 930 OC @ 4.0 ghz

XFX Double dissipation Radeon HD 7950 356 bit 3gb GDDR5 OC @ 1150 MHz core + 1575 x 4 memory

Triple channel DDR 3 12gb RAM 1600 MHz

Not to mention the other issues crossfire brings to the table, like Microstutter and waiting on AMD to update/release drivers/CAPS that support the latest game, first hand experience on that one!

didnt know crossfire caused micro stuttering. well i just learned something new :P ya just forget what i posted earlier then haha

R7 260X isn't going to be a re-brand, the hint that it isn't a re-brand is because it supports AMD TrueAudio.

It is.

AMD didn't make a new revision into GCN Arch... the actual version is the GCN 1.1 that only the chip into HD 7790 have it until now... R9 290 is based in GCN 1.1... so all GCN 1.1 cards can support True Audio.

The other rebrand are GCN 1.0 like HD 7800 and HD 7900... so these didn't support True Audio.

To make clear what AMD did a will try to make a table.

Videocard Chip Name Version Other videocards True Audio
R9 290 Hawaii GCN 1.1 - Yes
R9 280 Tahiti GCN 1.0 HD 7970 -
R7 270 Pitcairn GCN 1.0 HD 7870 -
R7 260 Bonaire GCN 1.1 HD 7790 Yes
R7 250 Cape Verde GCN 1.0 HD 7770 -

That what the sites are saying... like AnandTech for example.

GCN 2.0 or a new Arch only with 20nm next year nVidia rebranded the GPUs too... Maxwell is wating 20nm too.

Ah, depressing to be proven wrong on that one! :P
Did some digging and it's definatly going to be based on Bonaire XT. :(
Dammit AMD! Bad enough we have had the same cards for 2 years! They must be stupidly cheap to manufacture now though.

it also happens with sli ...

but ati have a beta driver which should reduce the microstutter to a minimum ... at least they try.
don't know if nvidia is also trying to reduce it in the near future.

By the way, this monitor only supports a VGA input. Can I just use a regular DVI cable with a converter like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DVI-I-DVI-FEMALE-TO-VGA-MALE-MONITOR-F-CONVERTER-VIDEO-ADAPTOR-15-29-PIN-SVGA-/390563575009?ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:GB:3160 or will that not work?

Alright, I've ordered the card and a DVI-A to VGA cable to go with it. I'll let you know how installation goes and how it performs.

Which card did you order?
Also do a before-and-after benchmark with 3D mark, to see the kind of jump you get. :)

Also, don't forget to uninstall the nVidia drivers before you install the AMD card.
